Merida, again
Well they did retcon everything, so many old characters never existed. Does not matter in the end of course, since nothing stops them from reintroducing them with new stories.

They’ve done it three times already. Armageddon rebooted everything. Then Mortal Kombat 2011, the first Mortal Kombat game after Armageddon rebooted everything again. Then they went one game without rebooting (MKX) before rebooting everything again at the end of Mortal Kombat 11. It’s a very weird way to run a series.

Oddly they never really take advantage of resetting everything back to when Mortal Kombat was just simply about weird fighting tournaments. Especially weird since “weird fighting tournament” Mortal Kombat is probably the version of Mortal Kombat most people have in their mind when thinking of Mortal Kombat as opposed to the MK3 superhero version of Mortal Kombat where everyone is fighting some actual ground war with Outworld.

It's because they always write these universe-ending plots that don't even make sense. To be fair, it must be hard to write a plot all of these people would care about. A small-scale tournament was fine when the roster was like 7 characters. And even now most characters feel superfluous in the story. Even OGs like Kano and Sonya. Maybe they wanted to show the inverse relationship the both of them have. The sexier Kano gets, the frumpier and more plain Sonya becomes. It's in moments like these that I'm glad I'm a bisexual.

A fighting tournament can serve whatever number of characters they want to put in. It’s not like the Mortal Kombat characters were meant to be the only people fighting it the tournaments anyways. You know how in the movie there’s a whole boat full of fighters going to the tournament? That’s from the official Mortal Kombat comic book John Tobias did to flesh out the original game’s story. There’s multiple boats in that comic arriving to the island full of fighters, and there’s a sea of them standing around as Shang Tsung and Goro announced the tournament is beginning.

If the new Mortal Kombat game comes out with like 25 characters it’s not like a fighting tournament would somehow make it hard to explain why there’s 25 playable characters there.

Should only be able to play 1 dude then slowly unlock other characters. Ya know, continual present opening. Hell, maybe restrict moves until unlocked. Toss in the who gumbo jambalaya and it is like a fucking mess. Change it up. But universes are broken and end game shit now is boredom. I'm surprised the roster isn't over 9k of selections now.

Isn't there a create your own fighter now? I haven't kept up with MK since II.

It probably won't be called Mortal Kombat 1. Also, the AAA industry is trying to normalize a 70 bucks price tag I see.

So they are doing another retcon of their retcon?

Well, it’s not a retcon. But they are rebooting everything yet again.

Given the ending of 11 it’s not surprising they’re going back to MK1 again. If they’re smart they’ll just keep Mortal Kombat in crazy fighting tournament territory from this reboot going forward instead of jumping into Mortal Kombat 3 war zone stuff.

This tease also makes no sense at all since WB already said Mortal Kombat was in development and coming this year. That clock tease is the kind of thing you do when your boss hasn’t already said it’s coming and given a time table. After Zaslav announced it they should’ve just jumped to showing some of the actual game.
