Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition update to replace the Games for Windows Live functionality with Steamworks is now live.
15 DECEMBER - SHOUPINOU
Dear Dark Souls fans,

You can now update your Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition for PC game to replace the Games for Windows Live functionality with Steamworks functionality. The update is available from today – December 15th and will let you keep both your Save Data and Achievements.
Please read below or visithttp://steamcommunity.com/app/211420/discussions/0/626329187083042093/ to read the update process.

If you played or are currently playing Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition, you will be able to update and keep your Save Data and Achievements. The Save Data and Achievements transfer service is being provided from December 15th to February 16th. From February 16th, the new version using Steamworks functionalities will become the default version of the game.

Please read the process below to update your game properly. Please note that from February 16th, we cannot guarantee that your Save Data and Achievements will be able to be transferred.

CASE 1: If you already purchased Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition prior to December 15th, the following process will be available to February 16th for you to transfer your Save Data and Achievements.

For users who purchased a Game for Windows live version from a retailer (Disc) or Games for Windows Live Marketplace (Digital):
1) We recommend that you add Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die to your Steam account using your serial
2) Launch the game and connect to Games for Windows Live.
3) Run the game (only the currently signed-in user’s Save Data and Achievements can be transferred to Steam).
4) Close the Game.
5) Right click on your game in the Steam Library, go into Properties, check that the BETA tab is set to “dsptde-2.0-“
6) Launch Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition v2.0 from Steam
7) The game will look for previous Save Data and Achievements. If Save Data and Achievements are detected on your computer, you should be able to continue your progress in the game. Achievements should be unlocked in Steam.

For users who purchased a Game for Windows live version from Steam:
1) Launch the game and connect to Games for Windows Live.
2) Run the game (only the currently signed-on user’s progress can be transferred to Steam).
3) Close Games for Windows Live
4) Right click on your game in the Steam Library, go into Properties, check that the BETA tab is set to “dsptde-2.0-“
5) Launch Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition v2.0 from Steam
6) Sign in using the same live profile used in step-2 to import your Save Data and Achievements from the Games for Windows Live version to the Steam version for the same profile (gamertag)
7) The game will look for previous Save Data and Achievements. If they are detected on your computer, you should be able to continue your progress in the game and achievements should be unlocked in Steam.

CASE 2: For users who purchase Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition between December 15th and February 16th:

1) Once the game is downloaded, right click on your game in the Steam library, go into properties, check that the BETA tab is set to “dsptde-2.0-“

Nothing inclined about a DRM walled garden platform being exchanged for another.

Mmmh, no. This is about exchanging two DRM walled garden platforms for just one. This is most certainly incline.

Most games on steam aren't even "DRM walled". The choice to protect them with steam DRM is entirely up to the developer/publisher.
But we are talking about a game exchanging GWFL for Steamworks, so what other games do is irrelevant.

He already posted an update on his blog.

Dark Souls update / DSfix compatibility
The Dark Souls Steamworks migration update is now live. As I expected, most DSfix functionality I implemented (which is based on API call interception) remains operational, but the framerate unlocking (based on binary hooks) does not work with the new version. This part was implemented by Nwks, so we should hope that he is still around and interested in updating it for the latest version. If not, I can try, but it lies outside my expertise and could potentially take a lot of time (which I’d rather spend on other projects). Of course, there’s also the chance for anyone else to step in, as all the code is available on github.

For now, you can use DSfix with the new version as long as you disable the framerate unlocking feature in the .ini file.

So if I install this now will it still install shitty GFWL on my computer? They're pretty unclear about that.

No.

You just have to update the game and run it once. It will copy all achievements and characters to Steam DRM. On second play, GFWL will be removed.

I don't really care about existing saves, though. I played it over a year ago on my old computer -- just don't want to install GFWL on to my new system at all. I'm hoping it's just 'boom' click 'install' and get a 'clean' GFWL-free install of the new Derp Souls.

Edit: From the responses I got from Steam discussions it seems like there's still no way to avoid GFWL live installing until this migratory period is over in February.

I think you need to opt into the beta before you run it.

Right, they mentioned that. However, since it's after the install period I'm guessing it just goes ahead and installs GFWL during the actual install and choosing the beta version just sidesteps it. Or maybe it's not installed until you select the non-beta version.

Right, they mentioned that. However, since it's after the install period I'm guessing it just goes ahead and installs GFWL during the actual install and choosing the beta version just sidesteps it. Or maybe it's not installed until you select the non-beta version.
Steam games don't install until you run them.

So download, opt in, then run. You might be good. It's probably just safer to wait though.

Mmmh, no. This is about exchanging two DRM walled garden platforms for just one. This is most certainly incline.
Except Steam is not a requirement for my physical GFWL copy.

I certainly prefer Steam to GFWL, especially given that the latter is likely to call it quits any day, but I could hardly call it incline.

I thought you could 'redeem' your GFWL version/key for a Steam version.

Gave it a try, it successfully transfered my achievements to Steam, but even after rebooting the PC Windows Live is still there.

EDIT: Just read the update, you must click on the game proprieties and select to use Steam Build Beta v2.... what a hassle.

Do you mean on the computer or when you run the game?

If the latter make sure you've opted into beta (and that should trigger another download). If the former, we're probably screwed.

What happens to your computers when LIVE gets installed? Should I throw mine out and get a new one?
The only way to be sure. GfWL never ever again asked me for my password after it got installed for the first game. If I add another GfWL game, it logs automatically into my account. Better burn your computer with something that makes it melt to a puddle.

Squeaky Clean: Dirt 3 Rinses GFWL Out, Gives Free DLC

Codemasters have taken Dirt 3 to the valet service, clearing out almost four years of crisp packets, newspapers, melted ice lolly goop, dried mud, travel sweet tins, and Games for Windows – Live guff. In what turned out not be a hilarious April Fool’s prank, yesterday they released a version of their racing game with GFWL cut out and Steamworks boshed in.

Folks should be able to add GFWL copies to their Steam library, and as a nice bonus everyone who owned it will receive the Complete Edition that includes seven DLC packs.

Folks who already had Dirt 3 on Steam should now find both a new DiRT 3 Complete Edition and ye olde GFWL version sitting in their Steam library, Codies community manager Lee Williams explained in a blog post. Why would you ever want that GFWL version? Well, Williams says, “Due to the differences with the two versions unfortunately your save files will not be compatible with each other. We know it sucks and we are sorry but it was unavoidable.”

If you got Dirt 3 as a boxed copy or other GFWL key, you should be able to drop that key into Steam to add it to your library and get the Complete Edition. It seems a few folks are having trouble with that right now, but Codies are trying to track the problem down.

Giving everyone all that DLC (a load of cars and tracks) is a nice move. There’s no easy way to transfer DLC from GFWL to Steamworks versions, so publishers need to decide how they’ll handle that. Only a fortnight ago, Capcom did it the wrong way, telling folks they’d need to rebuy on Steam any DLC they might have owned. Booo.

They took their sweet time but better late than never. I wonder if their other games will (finally) get the same treatment...
