As someone who would like to be a professional writer (i.e. earn my money from it), I'm conflicted on this sort of Kickstarter, but I lean towards being negative. Novels and other forms of creativy can be written while holding down a day job - it's been done many times over the years and to say 'I need to completely clear my schedule for 3 months to write a novel' is a bit wimpy, I think, especially when you're asking for others' money to do so and you don't have a track record in books.
But maybe this is tinged with jealousy on my part too, as I am one of those people who do have to have a day job to pay the bills but still work it around my creativity (for instance I intend to go part time and live on not so much in a month or so).
I'm not saying this is a scam. I just think in some ways it's taking the piss, a bit.
Having said that, people vote with their wallets and I wish Neal all the best. If I thought I could get $24,000 from kickstarter to allow me to write a novel, I would probably do so. At the moment I don't think I have the audience, although it's building.
