it did, they got the more cash out from Europe then from the US.
PET and VIC20 sold better in the US at the start, but C64 and the Amiga had almost horrible sale figures, while every chap and his grandma bought them in Europe.
dunno why (well i do, marketing was abysmal in the US, while in Europe they had ads everywhere), maybe it was because of the console market in the US (Intellivision, Atari etc) or IBM.

The Amiga didn't sell well in the US but the C64 fucking kicked arse there. The fact that classic RPGs and other yanksoft stuff (eg. US Gold, Epyx) came out on the C64 should have tipped you off to that.
