After the atrociously greedy Magic 2015 Duels of the Planeswalkers, Wizards has smartened up and took a page out of the Hearthstone playbook.
In July a new Magic Duels game called Origins will launch. It will be F2P with a hearthstone model for card acquisition.

I don't really understand the intensive focus Wizards has been placing on the Planeswalkers themselves and "story" over the past few years, but I suspect it has to do with their female marketing department that doesn't understand why people like the game.
In any case, this new version promises booster packs and full deck customization. The more complicated resolution mechanics of Magic, in particular the ability to play a spell on your opponents turn, remains a double-edged sword. It allows for a game with more depth, but at the expense of online game speed.
I liked the older Duels games, but skipped 2015 when I read about its pricing structure. Looking forward to this one.
