Hey

I need a general rule set for a pet project I'm working on, like GURPS for instance. Do you guys know of any tried and tested systems that are free to use?

JAGS is similar in size and scope to GURPS and is entirely free.
YAGS is also generic, but is much simpler than the above.
Fate is quite interesting but is also quite abstract. See it's progenitor Fudge for something similar but more traditional.
GORE is a free clone of BRP, one of the more enduring generic systems (you may know it already as Call of Cthulhu or Runequest). Go to the E-Book Store and scroll down.

You could also go through this blog for more links.

Why use a free system when you can largely rip off a successful, profitable, one that is most-assuredly to be awesome, as it costs money.

I like Fudge and would like to see a game based on it.
