Anyone still playing? =)

Just found this thread searching for what Okawarus new "heroism" spell did.

Thought I'd register and brag about my "random viable" Sludge Elf Assassin a bit! XD

level 10, d:8

+5 +3 elven quickblade
+2 boots of running
+3 ring of evasion
+0 ring of fire resist
+2 robe of magic resist

Fairly epic lewt for so early on! The blade was from a scroll of acquirement. :D

Still haven't clocked the game even once. :(

Still playing. All online though.

Don' worry, I played for well over a year before winning, and then when it happened I won a second guy (all runer) right afterwards. I still haven't repeated, but I've cleared out zot 5 times and had another 2 guys die at similar levels - one in pan and one in zot. Just splatted on level 23 of a zig with a disgustingly good SpBe of Ash... could cast tornado at excellent. Hell of a character.

I'm going alright this time. :D

deep elf Ice Elementalist, level 17

I have Orb of Destruction! What an awesome spell xD

It came from a Book of Annhilations that Vehumet gifted me. I tried to learn ice storm but it almost killed me for it.

I have the swamp rune and im just clearing the valut at the moment.

A question though... Do +dam and +acc effect spells?

Nope, only spellpower grants accuracy and damage.

Still, all slaying effects are insanely powerful.

NOOOOOOOO!

I'd just raided the elf:5 treasure room and was on my way back out. Held down the run button thinking it was all totally cleared out...

For fighting: Build up an xp pool and beat easy shit with your staff/etc. Recommended to turn off the weapon you're using as that eats up xp. Another possibility is saving the Hive for later (This is what I did on my DEWz, was my first win, too) and clear bits of it later on when you can easily melee a couple bees (And if things get out of hand, you can nuke'em quickly).

How to train fighting as a deep elf? Identify a branded short blade as soon as possible and start killing weaker monsters with it. This should give you 3-4 fighting before midgame, after than its about spending all available xp on fighting.

Starting with plants in the lair is fine too, especially since lair has those fat chunks of xp known as hydras and death yaks.

Hey now, SpBe is a perfectly good combination for one's first win.

Now that you have that first win, though, it's time to try out shit like an OgWr :smug:

Dodging is generally a bad idea on large races, turn it off next time, saves a lot of exp.

Well, my OgWr was going alright. Then I attacked an elf while on low heath. It turned into a fucking storm dragon! xD

Turn off dodging? But they can't wear armor so how do you defend yourself? I'd have to agree that the ogre couldn't dodge well. But what other options are there?

Large races use large shields and thats all for their defences. Also dragon armors. This is why Ogres, for example, are ultimate glass cannons.

So pick a huge one handed weapon, a large shield and pray.

Generally your hp should be your shield. The fact is that this does not work that way, large races are considered a challenge.

The problem with using a shield is that it eliminates the one real unique feature of an ogre: access to the giant spiked club. Admitedly, it probably is easier to use a shield, but where's the fun in that? :smug:

I am, however, largely in agreement with Mal. Skin any troll corpse you come across and enchant that hide up to +4 and that armor will serve you for the majority of the game.

Skill wise, I recommend to control how much experience you put into dodging and armor. This means that you won't have it off for the entire game, but rather have it on for only brief periods so that you can benefit from the modest investment. Basically aim for getting the most bang for your buck defense wise. Armor is a bit more important than dodging as it will improve your effective casting skill once you find some higher tier dragon armor (Storm is what you should aim for using, but it all depends on your other gear).

Also, what's up with not training translocations at all? With your spec, you'd be better off as a OgBe. The main reason I suggested a warper is that the early/mid game translocation spells greatly increase your survival rate. Nothing beats being able to cast teleport self and control teleport at will.

Well, I was thinking along the lines of leveling the strong apptitudes early then when I had a surplus of XP getting up the spells.

He was just such a hungry beast I couldn't really justify wasting a choko of hunger for no combat ability gain. I could cast apporition, blink and portal projectile at "very good", though.

I'd throw my ranged weapons until the enemy was in melee range then try to finish him with my mace. I'd only blink if it was something scary like a yak, throw some more, blink, runaway to rest, etc.

I'll try him again soon. I'm in a bit of a draconian phase at the moment. I seem to only get green though! Resist poison is most welcome, so its cool. :)

Isnt anyone else playing? Its all my rolls! Show us how its done!

I am playing (and killing off) demonspawns right now. Had some success with transmuters but those get annoying...

Also the random nature of mutations pissess me off. Like getting magic mapping AND antennae. Gee, thanks...

I've largely stopped playing due to burnout.

Also, you've got the justification completely backwards. It's because there is no "combat ability gain" that hunger is almost completely meaningless. The only spell that it's essentially vital to get hungerless early is apporition as you use that to victory dance the skill up. Blink is also useful to get hungerless early on as you'll actually use that multiple times in a combat. Both of these spells, however, are low enough that you'll easily get them hungerless with spellcasting turned off. If you're left with a choice between teleporting to (relative) safety with honeycomb+ hunger or potentially dying, it's a pretty damn easy choice to make.

Oh, and very good is actually rather shitty (80-90%). For any vital spell (practically all translocations qualify for this) you shouldn't settle on less than excellent (95+%).

Way to go man (couple weeks later). That's a solid fuckin first win.

I managed to win once during the tourney (a HuBe) but real life interfered and I only managed to play 30 games... splatted a MdBe of Ash that had shatter castable due to boredom / stupidity (he was a horribly character, I wanted to all-rune but after 4 runes and a ton of bad mutations I was sick of him anyway - I did get the pennant for making it to level 10 of a zig with him though).

My goal of having successful Berserkers with every race is getting closer...

Also didn't notice this.

Yeah, I have a habit of dropping Trog and turning berserkers into casters. Despite multiple level 27 berserkers I've only ascended one Trog worshipper (I considered dropping him, but I wanted to start the tourney 1/1 - which I did... then I splatted on the next 29 tries).

I normally make the decision to drop Trog before starting the character. All my stat gains go into int to make casting easier down the road. I wait for Trog to give me an endgame capable weapon to drop him, also ensuring I have enough food to do it. Normally this is around turn 25-40k. I always drop him before going past about Orc:4.

Dropping Trog takes 30-45k turns. I've done it successfully without the hiding / popcorn shield technique, but it's hard. You need a reliable source of controllable blink / teleport. Normally I just go to D:2 or 3 and hold down 5 in a corridor with a rat trying to hit me every turn.

After Trog I normally go Ash - particularly if I'm attempting a tornado Be like that SpBe or a couple HeBes I've done (both also splatted on late pan lord zig levels...). I also went Chei once with a halfling that found some cool stuff. He died in pan after converting to Zin.

I reeeallllly recommend webtiles if you can't play ascii online. Playing online is just much more fun (and webtiles loses some interface stuff, but gains a strong chat interface).

I missed the tournament, how did team Codexia do, if there was any ?

Webtiles is useless as long as it doesn't provide mouse support. Try playing on a keyboard without a numpad and feel the pain.

There was no team codexia. My team of guys from somethingawful came in fourth (though I got a single win in the tourney, it was much moreso due to a guy who streaked 4 or 5 wins in a row and maintained a 100% win rate...).

Meh, learn to use the weirdass ghjk movement system.
