Dayum. I was aware that some Czech devs tried to make an RPG on this topic, but it failed the KS and disappeared soon after, never heard about this one though.

There were plenty of cool things that happened during the journey to the far east along the trans Siberian railway (including a naval battle, believe it or not, lol), so its certainly a very interesting setting. I wonder if the politically dealing with both the Whites and the Reds that happened along the way will be part of the game - could lead to some interesting stuff on its own (as some would argue the Legionnaires decided the civil war by handing Kolchak over to commies). The game will obviously have both tactical and strategic/management layer, which is enough to warrant some attention in any case. The production values seem surprisingly high as well.

Will it be any good though? I guess we will see at some point.

Ah yes, the traitorous Czechoslovak Legion, not only did they sell Kolchak out, stole everything that wasn't nailed to the floor (from their nominal allies) but they also actively sabotaged the retreat of the Polish 5th Siberian Rifle Division. Among other things Czechs deliberately blocked the tracks with frozen locomotives at the Klukviennaya station near Krasnoyarsk. This immobilised the whole railroad and the Poles had to lay down their weapons, over 10.000 people were captured, almost HALF of them later died in Soviet camps. Of course there were other convoys on these tracks, as it was an almost constant stream of trains fleeing from the occupied part of Russia. Can't wait to see all these tidbits not be included in the game's narrative.

They should have based this game on the Belgian Armored Car Division instead, a much cooler unit that also had to escape east along the trans-siberian railway to get away from the chaos in Russia at the end of WWI.

Even better if they were to go a bit alt-history and have the soldiers load their cars on the train instead of blowing them up, so that we could have some manoever warfare on the way, not just be stuck to the train all the time.

Last Train Home thrusts players into the grim aftermath of the First World War. As a commander of the Czechoslovak Legion, you'll find yourself trapped in the chaos of civil war in the heart of Russia. Aboard an armored train, you must venture into the unforgiving landscape of Siberia and safely bring your men back home.

In order to accurately represent the time period, the team partnered with the official Czechoslovak Legionary Community which has ancestors of actual legionnaires among their ranks and operates the so-called “Legiovlak,” a faithful replica of a legionary train from the period 1918-1920 complete with a locomotive, infantry car, workshop, kitchen, ambulance, artillery car and more. The team was able to use the Legiovlak when recording to accurately depict the time when Czechoslovak war operations were taking place on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia.

Last Train Home is developed by Ashborne Games in Brno/Czech Republic and coming to PC. You can add the game to your wishlist here: thqn.net/lth-steam

Pretty accurate, since getting the fuck out was sort of the primary objective of everyone involved. People will bring up Kolchak and stuff like that, but the legions gave zero of a shit about any of that crap. The only reason they even fought the Reds was because it raised goodwill with the superpowers and made independence of Czechoslovakia more likely. The second the legions found out independence was achieved, they figured they had zero reason to keep fighting in Siberia and sought to GTFO as quickly as possible, no matter how.

Were those live action scenes made only for the trailer or are they going to be in the game?

Playing the demo, overall seems like a well put together game, but unfortunately the tactical part of the gameplay is yet another case of "stealth" with enemies that only see 25 meters ahead and enemy bodies disappearing immediately so you never have to worry about where you kill someone. Didn't you have to carry bodies in the original Commandos?
Some more stuff:
- you cannot change stance, can't crouch/prone = can't hide behind cover
- you can hide in bushes and tall grass but only where it's designated
- Scout's Recon skill let's you see an area of the map, even if you don't have LoS to it
- enemies' hearing is as good as their eyesight, you can blow up a cannon and nobody in the camp 50 meters away will notice
- the world map stuff is very monotonous, at least from what's in the demo

On the Q&A stream dev also said the demo will be available until release.

Make the Codex Great Again!
Thanks! The first two points you mentioned are a definite boner killer. Taking this off my wishlist.

Goddammit, why can't devs just go the non-casual route...
