Supposedly Maupiti Island is better than Morteville's, although less revolutionary.
I have, sadly, never gotten around to play any of them though.

Maupiti island is better, as in much more refined, than Mortville Manor.
But Mortville manor really succeeds with a really thick ambiance.
These two games are much more interesting than other attempts at computer sleuthing (including Infocom Deadline and Sierra Colonel's bequest, IMO)

No need to play Black sect
Most other adventure games by Lankhor are very obscure and french-only.
