Anime JRPG combat vs western blobber style combat - Why all the hate?

What do you think of the classic JRPG combat system?

  • I love it, it is the best system ever

  • There were a few JRPGs with good combat, but they are mostly shit

  • The basic concept is good, it depends on how the devs use it

More than anything, it just strikes me as odd that jrpgs are filled with such young characters all the time. It's not like games with older characters don't exist. In other genres its totally the norm; theres no children in Street Fighter or Dynasty Warriors. Nobody needs a fucking 15 year old prettyboy to be interested in Romance of the Three Kingdoms games or their ilk. So what gives on the rpg front?

Because RPGs have taken very strongly from the monomyth. Rite of passage stories work perfectly with the need for character power progression, and it's so much easier to design the story therefore around a young character coming of age.

See: FF7's Cloud who is stuck in several rites of passage (emulating Zack; proving himself to his current party and situation); FF8's Squall who literally is an academy cadet about to graduate (basically replicated in FFX)...

"But that makes my party build choices less important!" Well, sure it does. But party building, when it's done at the beginning of the game, is a pretty awkward form of gameplay, especially in an exploration-based game.
...
But then, if not exploration, what would an RPG be based on?

Excuse me, but I believe you've just outright stated here that RPGs have actually always been about exploration and not about, you know, roleplaying character builds.

Somehow nobody in this thread has picked up on how controversial a statement that is.

Apparently, people are willing to meddle with the definition of the genre itself just to rationalize their love for hard counters. O_o

You're basically right.
But if they really want children protagonists, at least they could make some not totally unbearable ones.
Sometimes they manage to do this. For example the main characters of the Shadow Heart series, the 4 characters of Earthbound or the main character of Tales of Vesperia are rather interesting, while some other ones are bearable because they are not too talkative.

On the other side Tidus an Yuna Oh my god....FF10 could be a great game. What a waste.

Have fun roleplaying an entirely scripted affair you can't explore in. Exploration has been the point of the genre since well befpre your newfaggotry of character building. Back in the good old days, you got whatever fucking character the dice gave you, and the important decisions were about dealing with the game world. AKA exploring.

If there's no 'I wonder what will happen if I do X', you're not playing a game, you're just telling a story.

Well, the thing is, having read that How to Balance an RPG article, I think Sawyer would mostly agree with my initial point - character creation isn't a meaningful gameplay challenge in the strategic sense, which is why he considers it important for all character builds to be viable and balanced, in which case the difference in builds is more a matter of flavour and personal preference rather than trying to put together an ideal character.

Of course, this is an issue that has always existed in RPGs to an extent. The more conventional way to deal with it, though, was through the exploration model - basically, that the world is put together in such a way that even with a sub-par build, you can scrape together enough stuff that you can get through somehow. A good build might have an easier time due to having more options available to them (which, oddly enough, means that having a good build has greater gameplay impact than in the model Sawyer espouses), but a bad build probably won't deadlock you because the equipment, companions, experience and such that you need to progress are out there somewhere for you to find.

So, if I consider roleplaying your character to be a secondary game element - I do in fact think that when it comes to computer games, it's something that generally works best when it's the cherry on top, rather than the main design focus - I'd say that Sawyer's right there with me. It's just that he (as far as I can tell) treats combat itself as the primary way to progress in the game (at least with Poe), whereas I think that exploration is at least equally viable in that role, and at any rate more prevalent in old RPGs. Nothing wrong with combat having the main focus, mind you - tactical RPGs often have no exploration whatsoever and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't think that makes them any more RPG-like, though.

Operation Abyss looks promising. I hate manga cutesy shyte, trope dialogue, but somehow manage to love Etrian Odyssey, and Persona/SMT.

Operation Abyss is basically a remake of the Generation XTH trilogy (which was originally a trilogy of indie games for the PC). The first part has a fan translation here if you're interested.

IMO it's one of the better dungeon crawlers I've ever played, including some PC classics. It's not as good as Wiz6-7-8, but that's not too surprising...

With the loss of said exploration the point of character building is also lost.

"Role-playing games are games in which players assume the roles of fictional characters and collaboratively create stories. Players determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players can improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games."

I don't consider JRPGs as true RPGs per se. The name only stuck due to how the Japanese perceived what they thought were RPGs, which at the time, weren't. They copied Ultima and Wizardly and to this day still use the same outdated bland combat system known as turn based.

Most JRPGs offer little to no character development, barely any-no exploration, and certainly no role playing. They are linear narrative stories, often having plot holes, inconsistencies, plot devices, cliche to cringe dialogue and so on.

More than anything, it just strikes me as odd that jrpgs are filled with such young characters all the time. It's not like games with older characters don't exist. Probably due to the fact that Japan has an infatuation with young people/kids, since they consider that their best times of their lives before they become slaves to their workforce and become depressed.

I don't like the JRPG combat system. It always felt slow and artifically obstructive. Western combat is more immersive and real for me, and that's what I'm looking for in RPG's.

I like both. It really depends on the game's atmosphere. I admit for the very first time I played FF7 I was really turned off by the battle system (cloud teleports to the enemies) but it grows on you.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
I think the dislike for JRPG's generally follows three different reasons:
1. Aesthetic - fuccbois and cutesy cartoony world with a lot of different things thrown together that don't really make sense.
2. Challenge (if there is any) based on attrition - a trend probably started with Dragon Quest where individual battles are usually trivial, but the trick is to manage resources between scarce save points. Which can be frustrating if you have to reload and replay large amount of content, which makes you wonder is playing worth the opportunity cost.
3. Filler content - random encounters amped up to eleven, necessity to grind, unnecessarily long battle animations and in some cases unskipable cutscenes.

There's also stuff like linearity and terrible writing, but those are as prevalent in western stuff. They just follow somewhat different set of cliches and tropes.

Lol @ the grinding myth. Probably since DW1 there haven't been that many JRPGs that you have to actively grind in, unless you are retarded.

Yes, because FF games don't have issues with random encounters. Lol, right.
