in terms of being a successor to the ie games, id rate this game ~5/10 - its a fantasy, party-based rtwp rpg, some ui elements look similar (like the selection circles, mouse cursor, dialog box ..), kind of uses a vancian spellcasting system, and .. there are 6 attributes just like in the ie games?.. uhh.. yeah thats about it i think.

Kinda. It feels like it was made by people who didn't really want to make an IE successor, but were forced to by external factors. That is, it successfully emulates a lot of your typical IE features, but also makes changes that aren't good or bad so much as bizarre and completely disconnected from what made the IE games fun. If you liked IE games, chances are, you'll like PoE as well, I'd say. I like BG2 a lot, consider BG1 to be mostly mediocre and kinda dull, and I'm enjoying my time with PoE, though I'm not madly in love with it.

Also, you should have joined on Thursday.

Avellone is responsible for the two shittiest and most insufferable NPCs in PoE so fuck him and what he thinks. His overly verbose philosodrivel bullshit granted him a one hit wonder in which it just so happens that his style fit that setting (which he did not create). He is incapable of creating good fantasy characters or dialogue and if Obsidian has any sense they'll keep him and anyone like him far away from the expansion and sequels.
