I used to manage a bicycle shop.
One day, my best mechanic, who hates selling, has been out on the floor talking to a guy for an hour at least about a couple of mountain bikes.
At the time, Schwinn was still a brand sold by independent dealers, and their flagship was a bike known as the "Homegrown", entirely manufactured and assembled in the USA. It was a premium ride, and cost a pretty penny.
The customer wanted a nice bike, but didn't want to pay for it, and kept going back to a much less expensive bike that really wasn't up to the desired experience he described.
I walked up at the critical moment...
Customer: Well, I just really didn't want to spend that much, can't I get by with this less expensive bike and upgrade as I go along?
Salesman: Sure, as long as you're happy riding something made in RED CHINA.
I turned around, walked to my office, closed the door, sat down at my desk, and laughed my face off.
We didn't sell that bike
