How have things been going?

I was a bit out of the loop, so, how has the game been shaping up? I can see there was a lot of activity on new interface graphics, and a new writer / editor. Which I take as an indication that there is a major effort to polish the game. Is that what you are mainly doing now, revising and fine-tuning the whole thing? I'm not gonna ask for a releasdate, but are you happy with the way things are shaping up?

Things are going well, and yes, we are mostly "revising and fine-tuning" at this point.

That's a very kind reply, VD.

I feel the proper answer should be: Read the bloody forum, you lazy twat!

Just two threads down there's a thread called "Pretti! Interface-graphics" that instigated a complete redesign of the interface.
Just look at VD's and Elhoim's recent threads for follow-ups.
This is the most important thing happening right now as far as I am aware.

There is "The upgraded writing" further down the forum, in case you missed that. Dunno what cues VD took from that discussion.

Who the fuck pissed in your cornflakes this morning Claw?

I mean, come on, Ghan mentioned both the UI and writing - and then asked about the bigger picture from VD's point of view.

Maybe you need to be de-clawing like my wifes cat does!

(EDIT: On re-reading, I'm pretty damn glad I wrote 'cat' and not 'pussy' there.)

What Hazel said :)
Since VD is too lazy to do any regular newsbits on his website or here, he can darn well live with an occasional thread like this. Suck it up!

So, how are things? And I'm sure you've all noticed that I have not put in any obligatory hardcore fetish porn or any hentai shota in with my post.

I realize it's probably too late to ask about this, considering how far the development process has progressed, but is there any chance of changing to a hex grid (instead of using squares)?

Nope.

Octagons and little squares? It'd be novel.

Claw: it's a little unreasonable to expect someone to read through e.g. 34 pages of interface tweaking, when they can simply ask someone for the gist. Reading through that as it's happening is one thing, but doing so after the event just means trawling through a load of now-redundant blind alleys.

In that case, could you elaborate a bit on how AoD handles diagonal movement and distance calculations? For example, do you mirror the D&D approach and count every even square of diagonal movement as 2 or do you use a completely different method?

That's an awesome point, with only one tiny little flaw: The oldest thread on the first page is from October 13th, which was around the time GBG left iirc. So he'd have to read through a single page of threads at best.
Of course, with some common sense he has to read neither every single thread nor every post in those he does read.
I just don't like the idea of people coming in and expecting an update for their convenience. Imagine everyone doing that. Every newbie, everyone not checking the Codex in a while. Half the threads would be "UPDATE PLZ" then.
Maybe I just spent too much time on NMA. When Rosh was still there and would bite your head off if you did that.

Absolutely, but I think you got a bit trigger happy with GBG in this case. Continue your patrol soldier! :)

You acted as a reasonable stand-in, although you lack his punch, and his capacity for extensive raving monologue.

Anyway, this forum hardly suffers from over-activity and newbie-flooding, nor does the game itself suffer from an overabundance of newsposting. While that is in a way refreshing, it is also boring. Anyway, your critique is beside the point - I HAVE read the whole shit, but there is very little in all of it that gives the bigger picture, and that is what I was trying to get at. The discussion of the umpteenth revision of some interface screen mockup doesn't tell me a great deal about the state of the game.
