Grids are unnecessary for CRPGs. Either do measurement based or do blobber combat.

Sure thing like factions and faction's "bookeepping" are unnecessary, when you can just spawn enemy waves and consoomers lap it up.

Even stuff like dishonored has "grids".
Factions and the question of their necessity are unrelated to why grids are unnecessary.
