There's the Dragon Quest Monsters series as well. I thought they were fairly interesting. The post game is a ridiculous grind though. Well, I suppose it's not as bad as the IV/EV stuff in pokemon.

Not like that matters unless you're playing against random people on the internet. The games themselves require as much grinding as you want there to be.

Sup, bros.

After finishing the accumulation phase, the time has come for some reduction.
I went through my collection and decided to remove:
  • shmups: only kept those for pretty graphics, never seriously played / completed even a single one,
  • beat'em ups: see above, only the vs ones (Virtua Fighter, KoF) were removed, I kept the "scrolling" ones (Final fight, Captain Commando),
  • plenty of games from series franchised to death (all Mario games except Nes & Snes ones, all Sonic games except the Genesis ones, etc.),
  • 90% of racing games. Many of them (esp. the "realistic" ones) aged badly. Plus, Wipeout is everything I need...
  • many low-quality platformers (Crash and Spyro games for GBA, etc.),
  • games that respectable members of the Codex found shitty (Persona 3, Xenosaga series).

All collectorfags should think about doing the same - let's face it, we aren't going to play all this stuff in our lifetimes...

BTW - I finished my PC collection long time ago, but I'm not gonna post it for obvious reasons (immense butthurt). Since I liked streamlining my console collection very much, I'm now thinking about doing the same with the PC one. Adventure games will most likely be the 1st victim: I completed Grim Fandango and found the gameplay shit, read through ghostdog's Indy and Gabriel Knight LPs and found both games unappealing... So I think the genre is simply not my cup of tea... And Infinity Engine RTwP shit will come next...

Anyway - more free GBs to store tranny porn!

Do Riven.
If you want the full experience, playing Myst/realMyst and reading Book of Atrus is recommended, although not strictly necessary. DVD-version of Riven from Myst 10th Anniversary is recommended. If (and only if) you encounter serious problems with Quicktime, use the GOG version instead. I also highly advise you to play in the original resolution, without stretching it fullscreen.
Obsidian is a pretty good one as well (albeit quite short).

Riven is an exploration puzzler and Obsidian is a (pretty much) linear puzzlefest. These are two of the best games in adventure genre gameplay-wise.
If you'd want something akin to Riven's gameplay after its completion, proceed to RHEM 1. And in case of Obsidian - proceed to ASA: A Space Adventure (I haven't completed it yet, but it seems to be really damn good in terms of quality).

I also highly advise you to play Antichamber, despite its overabundance of cube puzzles.

:killit:

That's precisely the reason you should post it, faggot. Also:

what is this i dont even

  • games that respectable members of the Codex found shitty

Keep in mind that even respectable codexers believe LARPing a drunk ukrainian is the pinnacle of gaming. Even a gentleman can have a scat fetish.

Removed most adventure games from the premises, keeping only the ones considered the best by certain quality communities (Kotaku, etc.):

Bad Mojo
Beneath A Steel Sky
Blade Runner
Broken Sword 1&2
The Day of the Tentacle
The Full Throttle
Gabriel Knight series (is keeping 2&3 a good idea?)
Grim Fandango
I Have No Mouth... (heard it’s not that good actually, despite the hype)
Indiana Jones series (is the Last Crusade any good?)
The Last Express
The Longest Journey
Loom
Monkey Island series (should I REALLY keep 3&4?)
The Neverhood
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Sanitarium
Still Life series
Syberia series
Tex Murphy series
Toonstruck
Zork Newshit series (Return, Nemesis, Grand Inquisitor)

1) Did I accidentally something REALLY crucial here? No FMV shiat (Phantasmagoria) please...
2) Should I remove something from the list above?

Oh yeah?

I forgot to mention that I decided to keep Legend Ent. games (Death Gate, Shannara, Gateway, etc.) and some others (Machinarium)...
These did not appear on Kotaku's "Best Adventure Games" list, but I find them monoclean enough.
And Y no love for Quest for Glory, dis being RPG site and stuff?

Add kgb, conquests of the longbow, Rome AD92, Lost Eden (even if it's gameplay and most graphics sucks donkey dick, music is great - like Dune actually, but dune music is best with a unemulated 'reverb' adlib gold), the dig, azrael's tear, sherlock holmes the case of the serrated scalpel, discworld 1, murders in space

I'm now left thinking you're some kind faggot lucasarts fan that can't handle death. That is the only explanation for most of sierra being left out, so naturally i recommend KGB to wean you off that shit

Of course hybrids like bloodnet, superheroleague of hoboken and qfg are in the crpg list

syberia instead of classics? lul.
Basically half your list is semi-old 'newshit' from after adventure games were dying and trying to 'reinvent' themselves and missing the really obscure and crazy older stuff.

But if you don't like adventure games, you don't like adventure game, whatever.

One of the hardest adventure games afaik (trial and error gameplay).

conquests of the longbow
What's so good/original about it?

Lost Eden (even if it's gameplay and most graphics sucks donkey dick)

But BRO!1!

There's the difference between:

a) "gathering phase": pls recommend adventure games you personally like (rare/flawed shit is ok)

and

b) "removing phase": pls recommend adventure games you personally like AND find essential to the genre (best shit only).

But if you don't like adventure games, you don't like adventure games, whatever.
this

:smug:

Some things:

a) pixel-hunting
b) illogical/"funny" puzzles (use everything on everything / combine everything with everything)
c) timed puzzles (the above, but + time limit)
d) dead-ends (the above, but after 2 hours you decide to check the walkthrough and surprise... You have to reload).

AFAIK I just described 99% of the genre.

Conquests of the longbow is semi-original for having a ending that depends on how you did during the whole game (you can fail to save/kill a whole lot of people during the game and IIRC fail to acquire enough money for Richard the Jew to be appeased or fail give away enough money so the mudsucking peasants have a good opinion of you). It's also very 'cosy' and familiar because of countless Robin Wood adaptations.

So spekkio since you don't like adventure games at all, why do you torture yourself ? Is this list for purely collectible value ?

Anyway, I consider Syberia to be shit. Instead of doing any actual historical or even geographical research, hack designer Benoît Sokal makes up some imaginary places to fit his silly story and puts some "automaton" crap in the story so he can rationalize the fact that you constantly find locked doors on your path, where you have to solve some completely unrelated automaton puzzle riddled on them.
I also consider Still Life to be shit (some VERY stupid puzzles and the story is nothing much) while I find Post Mortem to be great despite its flaws.
IHNMAIMS is great.
Keeping GK 2&3 is a good idea.
The last crusade is good, not as good as fate, but good.
Keep only monkey Island 3, 4 isn't worth it.

You probably have adventure/rpg hybrids stashed elsewhere, but since these are more point and click adventures than RPG let me remind you of the:

Quest For Glory Series
Veil Of Darkness
Elvira Mistress of the dark

Other adventures I love:

Discworld : Excellent humor, really some of the best humor in adv games. Some nice ideas on puzzles, but VERY hard and at times convoluted.
Discworld Noir: Notable for its awesome atmosphere and story. Interrogation puzzles are interesting.
Maniac Mansion: Multiple Characters, multiple paths... for this game the SCUMM engine was created... this game stated it all for lucasarts... need I say more ?
Conquests Of The Longbow: SCO said it.
Freddy Pharkas - Frontier Pharmacist: Nice lulzy story, solving most puzzles by gathering materials and mixing them into various concotions.
Shadow Of The Comet: The only 2D adventure game that actually manages to create such a heavy, scary atmosphere.
The Lost Files Of Sherlock Holmes - The case of the serrated blade: This, in my humble opinion, is THE Sherlock Holmes game. (its sequel isn't bad either)
Police Quest and Space Quest series are also worth of attention, get at least PQ1 and Open Season and SQ4 & 5.
Dreamweb: Yeah, you know.

EDIT: And of course Leisure Suit Larry. 1, 5 and Love for sale are the best.

Now go back to reading Kotaku.
