So, all there is outside are demons but the only people who have intelligence on the demons are those people who never leave town. Sounds like you're role-playing the dumbass in this world!

Yup, no surprise there. You're the guy they send out to kill shit, and once in awhile I'm sure you'll discover some piece of intel which you'll relay back to the commander Templar or what have you and he'll give you some assignment to kill a bunch of demons at some specific area. Roguelikes have never offered much in terms of 'purpose' besides killing things or simply surviving.

If Hellgate London were a guy, it would be a 43-year-old, partially-bald, glasses-wearing, pot-bellied middle manager at a clerical firm. He would wear thin black socks on really pasty, hairy legs and the bottom three buttons of his short-sleeved shirt would always be straining because of his pot belly.

In other words, eeeew. A bit scary even. And yet, at the same time, certainly something we all see a little too much of every day.

An interesting proposition: could you call Ultima 1 a kind of roguelike? the dungeons were random, monsters likewise, etc. It ad a wilderness, but little to do in it but kill monsters. Zandband had more interaction on the wilderness...

Yep, the early Ultimas and of course DungeonHack were definitely first person roguelikes. Hence, it would be utterly ridiculous to say that first person roguelikes or Hellgate London are "something we see too much of every day" since I sure as hell don't see anything like it in the market. There's a few freeware games here and there, but on the commercial market, there's absolutely nothing.

and there might be a reason for it - even if they seem to strike a chord among some players that do infact for some reason play them over and over.

There is no real reason for it. The industry has grown stagnant in the past few years. All they do is create the same shit over and over again even if nobody's buying it. Like the countless C&C ripoff RTS titles and EQ-like MMORPGs that seem to be cropping up lately.
