My latest board game obsession, dis game is phenomenal, imo.
Portugese Spice Merchant Auctions!
It's basically a game that takes course over 8 turns consisting of 2 phases. First phase everyone takes turns selecting and auctioning off items (you randomly place all the items (tiles) on the board, then take turns placing your auction makers on them), second phase you perform actions to collect more ships/spices/money/cards/colonize. You can also spend an action to upgrade your tech tree (earn more stuff per action) but that costs ships and spices. End of the game you earn points based on how far in your tech tree you got and bonus points for colonies/card sets and certain tiles.
Obviously that sounds like a confusing mess from that one paragraph, but once everyone learns what's going on it goes really smoothly and it's very intuitive. If the idea of auctioning off resources to one another and then using said resources to tech sounds cool, then check dis game out.
Plus it's top 50 on boardgame geek, which normally means it's pretty decent.
