Just thought I'd let you in on a game I've been playing and probably would interest some of you: The Five Pillars

This game has managed to keep my attention for quite some time now. It's not a hard concept to grasp, but to actually play it well, is not all that easy.
The game is turn based: meaning you get one turn every 5, 7 or 10 minutes (depending on the server you’re playing). With these turns you can do things like build an army, research and use spells, attack or buy items from the market.
You can put as much or as little time in it as you like. As it takes about 24 hours to get maximum turns, you can play once a day if you’re active. But this is not a requirement.

The nice thing about this game is the community: although the player base is still not large enough, the players that are involved right now are more than happy to welcome and help any new players. This help can be found in the forums and on IRC and you can also join a guild and instead of fight alone, fight and learn with (new) friends.

However, it might be difficult to understand everything right away. First of all, you can read several start-up guides that are available. But sometimes they don’t have all the answers. My advise: don’t give up. Try things yourself, or ask around if you really need help. And if you die, just reincarnate and try again.

+ Community
+ Administrator (listens to player’s comments and tries to improve the game as much as possible)
+ Challenge

- Difficult to get started (ask help if necessary!!)
- Minor bugs that still appear every once in a while
- Small player base

It’s worth checking out.

Aside from the fact that the footsteps you're treading are well-worn and end in blood, this looks more like turn-based strategy anyway. The site doesn't even use the words "role-playing game," near as I can tell.

Press release: New round of The Five Pillars

Bergen Norway, Wednesday 15th of September 2004

The Five Pillars admin have announced a new round of their massively addictive Online Multiplayer Strategy Game “The Five Pillars.” (T5P) As typical this means a transition from one round to the next via the games in built 24hr open season for all out attack and spell casting havoc.

In T5P’s havoc period players will use all their resources fighting to the very last man (or woman) to have their names inscribed into the hall of fame. Commanding mighty and formidable units such as Abominations, Dreadnaughts and Balrogs from each of the five alignments (Swamp, Plain, Forest, Mountain, Elemental) they will send forth their armies onto the fields of battle to deal death and destruction to other glorious mages from across the globe whilst casting spells to both improve the might of their own armies and weaken their foes.

The Fast and Normal servers which allow guilds, clans and alliances will go into havoc a mere hour after each other followed shortly by the exciting and competitive solo server where alliances are out the window and every mage must battle for themselves.

Whilst competition will be fierce especially among some of the power guilds on fast and slow everyone has truly enjoyed this reset and with the coming end of the round now is the perfect time for new players who are interested in Online Strategic Roleplaying Games to come along and join in the fun and participate in the active and entertaining online community that surrounds the game. The community is player friendly and unlike other online games where veterans horde knowledge to themselves, a friendly face is almost always available to answer questions of those new to the game.

The game is free to play and all are encouraged to come along and give it a try, on the site http://thefivepillars.org

The new server round will start Monday 20st of September at 08:00 CET.
