High Bolide will do the job. My MC and sidekick Sorcerer can kill Golems without too much fuss. They aren't very difficult to survive. The hardest part is hitting the medallion on the bottom of their foot.

In the pawn recruitment thingy dimension there are several incredibly high level pawns decked out in gear, I assume these would be completely gamebreaking to hire? Why are they there?

Going to shill the World Difficulty mod on Nexus for anyone wanting to venture back into this classic. Haven't played it myself but sounds neat. Until then, I must play DD2!

I did it. I beat the fucking beholder gazer. I wish I could say it was because of some cleverness. Some unique insight I made through prior failures. Alas, I just did more or less what I had been. The only difference was this time the attacks landed for some inexplicable reason. At least I didn't pussy out and switch from sorcerer class to something else. The victory was pure.

I wish I had problems with 1 time bosses instead of stumbling upon multiple elder ogres where each battle dragged on and on. Respawning made everything worse.

Since I started my replay of this, I've noticed the Pawns in DDDA are seriously retadred compared to DD2. I'm finding their general behaviour really frustrating and I don't remember feeling this annoyed with them when I originally played it.

Definitely that, but they do get better once they get experience. They never get to DD2's level though.

Pawn behavior in the original Dragon's Dogma varies dramatically with their inclinations, which are far more restricted in the sequel. After the PC port was released, I downloaded a mod that allows the player to select the primary and secondary inclinations for all procedurally-generated pawns, which rendered them far more helpful than they had generally been in my playthroughs on the Playstation 3. For your Main Pawn, of course, you can purchase potions from the vendor at the Encampment, which allow you to set the primary and secondary inclinations; you should periodically reset these to avoid drift that will tend to occur over time.

I'm getting deeper into BBI now that I finally passed the Gazer. While the game has once more resumed telling me that "I should be this tall to ride", I'm not having too much trouble. I found another void key and ended up fighting a cursed dragon. It was a let down compared to other bosses. It was only me and my main pawn, but we smacked it around with fire. It barely got any attacks off. he nice thing is that it dragon forged ALL of my gear. Even my nice new Meniscus staff. I had fun fighting my first Minotaur. Miasma and the lightning whip (high brontide?) did it in quickly. TAn elder ogre randomly spawned, but I was able to push it off a cliff pretty quickly. I'm wondering how much deeper this thing goes. Gazer excluded, I think the nightmarish hellhounds are the most difficult for me to fight. They definitely cause me to clench up when they spawn.

Once you figure that out, maybe take another dip from the beginning...

I think I actually prefer the art direction and area design in DDDA to DD2. Obviously the areas are much lower poly and it's pretty obvious sometimes, but with a lighting/shader mod it still looks very nice on the whole IMO.

My Sorcerer pawn is still a bit of an idiot even though she's level 118 and has Utilitarian/Challenger as her inclination. The Scather/Challenger Ranger I hired keeps forgetting she has a bow, too, and the Mage I hired only casts High Anodyne when in combat despite having Greater versions of all three Elemental spells and having Utilitarian as her primary inclination. All three of them spend more time running in circles or jumping than they do actually being useful in combat.

Just out of curiosity, are you playing on Normal difficulty or on Hard?

Stoned Ape Normal difficultly. I don't think I would remotely stand a chance at BBI if I were playing Hard Mode. I think I just hit Level 63, but I suspect I've been advancing the plot a bit too slowly in the main game. Whereas on BBI I feel underpowered and vulnerable much of the time, on the mainland I'm a demigod. I've paid so little attention to the plot that I'm not even sure where I am at on it. The most recent event I can recall is getting thrown in the dungeons by the Duke after his wife tried to seduce my MC unbidden.

It might be worth switching to Hard Mode for a restart after you feel you've got far enough into BBI, then sticking on the mainland until you reach the post-game.

If you choose Hard Mode, you will restart from the beginning with all of your levels, money and items but all the stuff on the mainland will hit a bit harder and give you double XP. When you reach around level 80 or so, try another BBI run and if it's too difficult change the difficulty back to normal then keep going from there.

DD2 is better in some regards, but overall DD1:DA is better.
I dunno. I feel that DD2 has better vocations even with only having 4 selectable skills. Combat is balanced better so Fighters and Warriors are enjoyable to play through to the endgame. Trying to play Warrior through BBI was not a pleasant experience.

I think DDDA does an awful lot of stuff better than DD2, but DD2 has superior combat, for me the Pawns are more useful, and they seem more like teammates than bots.

Overall I prefer DD2 but DDDA is still a fantastic game that offers a different experience than DD2.
