He doesn't like focus group testing, but he is a big fan of getting people in to test his game and watch them play. Can someone translate this into english?

He likes getting info by watching the players play, but he doesn't want to hear them actually voice their opinions.
Sounds like a basic failure to understand what a focus test in the games industry is. He's doing the same thing everyone else is, but saying it in a way that makes him feel like a special rainbow.

All I heard is "people suck at communicating" and "it's easier just to see how stupid they are." What's so special about that?

Actually, watching someone play is more informative - there will be things you notice this way that are crucial to player's enjoyment of the whole experience despite them stating they were horrible, and things player will think they liked, but actually game would work much better without.

If I was making, say, Amnesia, I wouldn't want to hear my playtesters talking to me about it, but I would need to see their reactions and playstyle developing in response to the game.

Agreed DraQ. Old Sierra Online used to do the same exact thing (viewing what playtesters did).
