I always love the attitude over here. "Hey, here's a guy posting every couple of days on a subject we all claim to care about." "Let's tear him down as much as possible!"

I am just a guy who really enjoys RPGs and likes to write about them. You don't have to enjoy or even read my blog, but do you think maybe "douche" and "retarded" and "pure shit" and whatever are, I don't know, a little harsh when we're talking about a hobby that we all enjoy?

People ask why I don't participate here. This is why. These are games. Why do you all like to get together and call each other horrible things over games? I've disagreed with lots of commenters on my blog, but I don't think I've ever sworn at them or called them "retarded."

A lot of people from here regularly check your blog, I know I do. Even though you have praised Oblivion and Fallout 3, so that says a lot, I really respect your effort.

This is a forum where insults are tolerated, which leads to a certain atmosphere. I know for one that I thrive in that atmosphere, but if you are a very sensitive person who will seriously be sad or angry because someone calls you a retard on the Internet, you still have room to grow.

This is indeed a close-knit community in the sense that there are lots of "local celebrities" who have easily recognizable Internet personae. But as is the rule on the anonymous parts of the Internet, if someone writes an extremely abrasive diatribe about how much they hate you and how stupid you are, you will have to learn to react with amusement. Nobody is going to find you and kill you IRL because you rated the M&M games in the wrong order.

As for being delusional about his blog's value
It is of great value for us RPG nerds on this SITE ABOUT RPGs. Also, weren't you banned several times in the past?

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Some of the comments above have been enlightening, though. I guess I need to regard this site more like Reddit--chaotic, little moderator control, silence not necessarily indicating approval--rather than the more close-knit community that I've always thought it was.
What
If anything you should think of old 4chan and /b/. There are moderators but just about the only rules enforced are "no child porn" and "no piracy." Moderators here exist but mainly they just move threads around for no reason; not like the Clinton-paid Reddit shill moderators that dutifully ban any dissenting opinion.

This is the single most tolerant place on the Internet, now that /b/ has turned SJW. Everyone is welcome, everyone can say whatever they want. It's the pure essence of free speech, in all its ugly and liberating glory. The truth is, ever since I've known the Codex, I could never post in any other forum ever again because someone always gets their fucking feelings hurt and cries to moderators about me calling them a retard. Kids aged 7 call each other retards and those grown-up men can't handle it on the Internet? Don't make me laugh.

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
I don't claim everything I've written is pure gold--you try to keep up a consistent level of quality over 7 years, 900 postings, and 1.5 million words. But I've linked appreciatively to numerous Codex threads and articles, and I've done my best to contribute to this genre, and every time I bother to pop into this thread, someone's calling me a "retard."

I've heard of your writings, but can't say I've given them much thought. I see that you've spent a lot of effort on them, and what I'm hearing from others gives the impression that you've done a good job overall. But that's just my impression - nothing more. I prefer not to comment on things I don't know about.

However you're making one mistake (and this I DO know about) that you need to be made aware of: You've created something, but even though you've shared it with the world you still think it's yours... you won't let go of it.

When someone creates something and releases it to the public, they're also relinquishing their ownership over it. It's out of their hands, and it's for the world to enjoy. Or hate. Or love. Or "meh" about. Or joke about. Or to give others ideas of their own. Or to use as the basis of a limerick that will be performed on the next Open Mike Night, in which case someone has taken your work and made something new with it, and in the process shared it with the world and have it taken out of their hands. Ripples upon ripples. All of Human history is based on this concept.

And no matter what you create, someone will like you for it, someone will love you for it, someone will hate you for it and someone will want to see you hang for it. Because that's just how Humanity is: No matter what you say or what you do, someone will disagree with you. And what someone thinks of you because of what you created is completely out of your hands. If you can't accept that fact, you should never create anything ever again.

Every author, painter, thespian, singer, photographer, architect, developer and countless others of their ilk that came before you, have had to face this exact same dilemma. Looks to me that most of them learned to live with it. Care to join them? Then chill out, knowing that you can never win this, but you can come up with many ways not to lose. Whining like this is not one of them.

But I wish I'd listened to those of you who told me not to play it at all. I'm deleting the rest of the series from my game list, and I will not be playing any more games that feature sexual assault as a primary game element. The only time I ever want to see Rance again is in a game in which I--preferably playing a female PC--get to kill him.

Looks like we have ourselves another Jeff Vogel situation - a man inimical to alternative perspectives, yet posturing like some great thinker.

This thread is fucking diamond!

Rance actually loves Sill very much

and he actually gets very angry when women are killed or hurt in any way, because he could "love" them instead

gotta love the double standards, you can kill tons of animals, niggers orcs and jews gnomes in "normal" crpgs but when there's rape only then violence is a problem? are you a 14 year old virgin?

I don't know this guy's blog but did he really love Oblivion and Fallout 3? :abyssgazer:
That's like going on a beer enthusiast's blog and finding out he loves Peroni and Dreher.

Meh. The dude's played more old school RPGs than almost anyone on the codex. I say he's earned a right to play and enjoy whatever popamole game he wants.

No, is the other way around. If he played many old-school games he should have criteria by now; if he doesn’t or praise these games in public, the insult is even worse.

I liken it more to someone who reads great literature but still enjoys the Sunday newspaper comics section. After your mind has been exercised solving puzzles, toughing it out through a series of tactical battles, and drawing your own intricate maps, it's probably fun to do the occasional popamole game. I'm a bit different and will just play a light-hearted RPG in between tough ones, but I get it. I played through both Oblivion and Fallout 3, and although I thought they were bad games on the whole, each had the rare good moment: assassin quest in Oblivion and clearing out a warehouse of raiders who outclassed me in the beginning of Fallout 3.

Your analogy would be appropriate if the Sunday newspaper comics section had the size of a book.

He played FO3 and Oblivion before he was the crpgaddict.

So he said he enjoyed popamole games, but it will be awhile before he rates them since he is only up to 1991. On his website, though, here are his top dozen games so far:

Ultima V
Ultima VI
Pool of Radiance
The Dark Heart of Uukrul
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Might & Magic 1
Might & Magic 2
Disciples of Steel
Champions of Krynn
Death Knights of Krynn
Hero's Quest: So you Wanna be a Hero?
Starflight 2

What does your list look like?

I'm with her.

Okay? I'm with her.

And unless you promise me the same, in a safe, non-obscene, manner, you can get the fuck off this site with that RPG-related question of yours.

And don't you EVER come back.

While I think that the crpgaddict is some sort of pathological liar--can't imagine a middle-aged heterosexual male who works in defense being a thin-skinned overemotional snowflake, even if they are from Massachusetts*--xir credibility when it comes to RPGs is above reproach.

*(Then again, I remember some JAG crying in public about 4chan trolling him, so maybe it's just a generational thing.)

Sadly enough, it is pretty much a generational thing. Most of us Millenials can't stand surviving in a normal real world where not everyone is nice and some people being outright assholes. My generation (me included at times) needs to get some thicker skin and get over themselves

Plus over-sensitivity to rudeness and normal emotional response are a common difficulty for folks leaving the military. I don't mean PTSD or trauma-problems. They've been living in an environment where there's rules for everything, and being completely anal about every little thing is rewarded (because it's what could stop them from stepping on a mine, etc). There's a long-known problem where a minority of (not traumatised, not PTSD or depressed) vets will come home and completely sperg out when they see someone littering, or have a meltdown because the driver was travelling at 62 km/hr and the rules say 60, 60 km/hr goddamit what is wrong with these people!!!

Plus if he's USA there's also the thing with their military being used as their substitute for a welfare/unemployment service. When people say military, everyone thinks the front line divisions and patrol squads. They forget that there's also your Gomer Pile divisions with guys who couldn't get a job anywhere else. Remember the Abu Ghuraib scandal (or however it's spelt), where the US guards were busted for sodomising the prisoners etc? They were all guys with no high school, borderline illiterate, and the female officer - officer - in charge had an IQ that medically speaking counted as 'intellectually impaired'.

Or Bradley/Chelsea Manning, not only a war vet, but also had access to massive classified intel.

You can't have a military that big and have it all full of the kind of people you imagine when you see Hollywood propaganda films. Increasing the size means decreasing the standards, it's unavoidable. That's why, in nations where the military also doubles as the unemployment/welfare system, you have your army split into many different divisions, with wildly varying entry standards - so you know who is cannon fodder, who is long term, and who is literally too dumb for combat.

I was mainly referring to the US, as I don't know the extent of these sorts of problems elsewhere. And we've talked about the fact that most people in the US military are poor folk who had nowhere else to go. The fact that there are some mental retards in there isn't that surprising to me tbh. I still have great respect for the people who are able to go there and see that shit, but sometimes I hear stuff like this and say "Huh, Makes sense."
