RPGs are full of trope character archetypes. Which is the coolest? Is it the unflappable rogue with daring-do? The Arthurian holy warrior? The inscrutable mage with god-like power? Who rules the cool? You decide!

In what context? NPCs or protagonist or character progression?

If NPC I'm of a fan of snooty, seemingly foppish Holy Warriors who are actually legitimately competent. You don't see it often anymore.

Protagonist, I like mages, so probably the all-powerful wizard.

Progression: I am a massive fan of systems where you're a straight mortal nobody and yo lu acquire your magic or power through adventure or defying the odds. I'm not talking Level 1 Fighter, I'm talking you began as a farmer, or a dog catcher and eventually became a renowned Ranger.

All of the above.

Why? Because the "coolest" thing about a true RPG is having a diverse band of characters whose strengths rely on each others'; whose survival depends of each other performing their assigned tasks and duties expertly; whose goals intermesh but cannot be achieved without party synergy and unity of purpose.

Otherwise of course it's the paladin. Yeah, the paladin.

Indomitable Barbarian who overcomes all adversity with strength, weapon skill and brutal rage. No clever tricks or arcane witchery, just introduce all who oppose you to your Greatsword or Greataxe or other weapon of choice.

However, Holy Warrior is another good one. A Paladin who keeps his faith and noble spirit in the face of complete darkness and against all evil and depravity. His real strength is not so much in his skill at arms, but his faith and spirit.

Depends on the person, I think. I really like the XX century MacGyver merc archetype.

Said God-like Arcanist but also accept summoner or necromancer, or maybe a super buff/debuff specific class but that *could* count as an arcanist.
