How is that even a question? Fallout of course! I won't tolerate any other opinion!
But one could argue about Arcanum and Fallout 2 ... hmmm ..., then Arcanum

Both are awesome games, but I like Arcanum more.

The crafting system is awesome, I love the atmosphere, Tarant is amazing. The setting is more unique in my opinion, but this might be because we've had a lot of post apocalyptic games in the last few years.

I need to replay Arcanum to answer, really. I liked it nearly as much as Fallout, but it's been like 12 years. Fallout I replayed recently (couple years ago) and is still a great game. Another game in the backlog :P

I dont know, Fallout 1 was too short for me. Always been a major disadvantage for me. You get into the game, get into the world, start to know your shit and poof, the end.

Arcanum has problems but its just meatier imho.

Didn't play Arcanum. Does it worth buying? I played Fallout and it was enjoyable. Is Arcanum at Fallout level?

Arcanum is spam 1 spell to win. Its dialogue, writing and world is interesting, but the combat and enemies are just cancer. Had to stop halfway because I couldn't take it anymore.

In Fallout you spam eyeshots to win. Combat in both games suck, fallout is just slightly more fun in that regard because of gore.

And people call me dumbfuck when I say the same...

Fallout, both of them.

Arcanum has interesting system behind it. It's not balanced in any way, but it offers decent range of specialisation for your characters together with draw-backs for being overly specialised or spread too thin.

Combat in both is not very good but in Fallouts it's more bearable(the fact that the games aren't THAT padded with dungeons also helps.

Fallout is a better complete package, in that there wasn't anything horribly bad like Arcanum's combat, but Arcanum was like a beacon of hope that showed the next true step to RPG goodness. The first time I played Arcanum I thought to myself this is the closest I'm going to get to playing a single player pnp simulator. I have yet to play any crpg past or present that came close to reaching that.

Maybe I have rose-tinted glasses, but I remember a time where most of the dex praised Arcanum. Now it seems the common response is "is this worth playing?" :negative:

Fallout was the beacon of hope of its time too, remember it came out in 1997 and Arcanum in 2001, plenty of time to be inspired or learn lessons from Fallout.

No need to get sad, I'm sure most that RPGCodex, despite being polluted with some FO4 decliners, still praises Arcanum to high heavens.

Oh yeah not saying FO1 wasn't a big deal at the time too. I guess what I'm saying is Arcanum is great in that it felt like we were making progress towards the type of rpgs FO1/2 had promised.

Arcanum has some aspects that are superior to Fallout, but it's mechanically broken in too many places and has way too much trash combat to really challenge Fallout. Both games are still great, though.

All they had to do was put something similar to fallouts combat in Arcanum.

Arcanum is a posterboy for "less is more" I think. While the size of it can be alluring, there's so much useless shit shoved in there that it actually hurts the game. I still love the game overall but it fucking annoys me as well because it could've been so much better if they had focused it more.

Fallout is a better game I think.

Excuse me, too much useless shit? I haven't had such an euphoric moment in years, as when I dug through trash cans in Arcanum for my technologist.

On that note, Arcanum should be played as a Technologist, that is the real experience.
