Interface isn't even that bad, just get used to it after an hour or less. Hotkeys are your friend, grab a pdf of the shortcuts, print it out(like we used to print tons of game resources in the old days), and you're good to go.
The interface is not optimal, but it's still better than 90% of the consolized shit that's published today.

Has anyone posted the .txt short story that explains how the factions split en-route? I thought that was well done.

I just reinstalled after ages of not playing, what unofficial patches and/or mods do I need? I'm currently just playing vanilla SMAX with old factions. It seems that kyrub's for SMAC and kyrub's/Yitzi's for SMAX should be the ones, right? Or is there something else I'm missing?

The worst part of the story is that Firaxis could easily recreate SMAC with their CivIV and even CivV engines. Even more so with CivV - as one unit per hex would negate main flaws SMAC had - useless arillery, doomstacks and terrain value. SMAC doomstacks were the worst of all Civ-like games, even worse than CivIV. Plus, SMAC suffered enormously due to retarded combat AI, which spammed expendable, weak units without armor or with weakest weapons, in other words - all the worst designs possible in Workshop. At the same time game had one of the most interesting diplomatic AIs none of the successor civs could recreate.

You can see this game was made with love by people with a broad interest in science, history, cinema and literature -people with rich sources of inspiration to draw from. I suspect most of today's younger game designers are illiterate consumer drones and/or strongly influenced by the shitty cultural tropes of the new millennium. They don't even know what they don't know and that's why a game like AC would be impossible today.

:necro:

Hit the nail on the head. 99% of nerdoms problems are the fact that they are literally conditioned from birth to be mindless consumer peons, and devs are just a reflection of that.

You want something that'll really piss you off, read this thread:

It's just a bunch of dorks dogpiling on normal humans that don't want to pay $20 for unfinished races in Warhammer
