  1. NWN 2: mask of the betrayer is out now.

It is not quite that animalistic, but definately more self-degrading to see CRPG romance as a way to sexual gain.
  2. Two Worlds - any good?

Generic aRPG-Hero: "Forsooth, there's a piece of ham sticking between my teeth." Generic aRPG-NPC: "Mayhap I can help you with a toothpick."
  3. Dumbing down

I won't disagree. Storywise, no 80s game compares to the great games produced between 1997 (Fallout) and 2004 (VtM:B). And a good story is the key to a good rpg. Still, my points related solely to combat - there's plenty of "holistic" RPG threads out there and I didn't intend this to be one...
  4. Dumbing down

Otingocni, thanks for fixing things for me. Guess I was right to go to bed and leave these things to the people who are less technologically impaired than I am. Yes, this was one of the most important tactical features of the gold box series. It is also a feature that has been included both in...
  5. Dumbing down

Same here... even though I pushed all my party up to level 40 to beat it (wasn't it three fights in immediate succession, or something?). In any case, there's hardly a point in advocating unbeatable fights. And I do recall having to reload a lot more often than I do in modern games.
  6. Dumbing down

I have been wondering whether this forum really needs any of my nit-picking, when everything I want to say has already been expressed by others who are far better at this sort of thing than I ever hope to be. I guess my conclusion was no, but since it won’t matter, here I go anyway: This...
  7. Shepard gets more extreme - summary executions!

This would be a mildly interesting dialogue option in case you actually did not kill 50 guards to get in. Yet somehow my mind tells me that this will not be the case...
  8. Interview J.E. Sawyer on RPGs at NWN2News

True. Now, I wouldn't answer a question like "When do you feel we will ever see another Fallout, Planescape or BG2 type epic, deep story driven game?" quite like Mr. Sawyer: That definately was the key to PST, yes it was...
  9. Game News Dave Gaider on DA classes design

I think obediah convincingly rebutted this argument above. In a party-based game, classes are just an expression of the division of labour that a party is meant to accomplish in the first place. Of course, opting for a class-based system does not necessarily bar players from selecting abilities...
  10. Game News Ashes announced

It is interesting that someone would mention Drakkhen. Exploration in that game was indeed interesting, though what most impressed me was the 70- or so page background story that came with the game. I hope they don't take it as an inspiration for their NPCs, though.
  11. Teh irony! (Dave Gaider on RPGs)

You also treat the idea as a historical concept, while the rest of world treats it as definition concept. The rest of the world treats it as a what? A tautology? Frankly, I do not quite see what you are getting at. In my world, definitions/concepts are usually based on some pieces of...
  12. Teh irony! (Dave Gaider on RPGs)

But then again, why does Diablo-style clicking on enemies make a game an RPG? Truth is, you will always be able to squeeze any game you like into the RPG box, if you try hard enough. Players in my football manager game have stats which increase/decrease based on training and match...
  13. Teh irony! (Dave Gaider on RPGs)

I cannot recall ever claiming that Torment was not an RPG. My point is really quite simple: for a good RPG, the first and foremost element you need is a great plot, rather than the choice of playing it as a goody-two-shoes paladin, an evil munchkin, or a gangsta rapper. Too much freedom is...
  14. Teh irony! (Dave Gaider on RPGs)

While Torment featured loads of dialogue choices in the zillions of conversations which the Nameless One had to engage in, I simply do not buy the story that the game offered you a great deal of freedom. Sure, the number of factors which your dialogue options depended on were impressive, but -...
