  1. Games like freelancer/privateer?

Tachyon is good fun and has pretty decent voice acting (Bruce Campbell). There was an attempt at porting it to the fs2open engine, but I'm not sure if that's still alive -- what somehow still remains of the multiplayer community frequents that site though. More recently, there's also House of...
  2. Mindless fps f(r)agfest games?

Not mindless (unless you like dying), but Natural Selection 2 definitely scratches the action itch.
  3. Ceres

The perennial question: Is it an rpg decline? Haven't heard of it before today and don't see any mention of it on the codex: http://www.ceresthegame.com/ http://store.steampowered.com/app/351300/
  4. Games with modular, extensible (ideally dynamically) A.I

Not sure if they're as modular as you'd like but both Warzone 2100 and Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 have a great deal of accessible/extensible AI code. Natural Selection 2 has fairly rudimentary bots with easily accessible/editable code (Lua).
  5. Examples of non-combat actions in turn-based combat?

Another couple from JA2 that I didn't notice listed: -Frantically waiting while my backup medic applies first aid under fire to stop my only doctor from bleeding out. -Putting loose ammo into magazines for later use -Suppressing fire
  6. Decline Thiaf Pre-Release Thread

They change all the "superficial shit", like the atmosphere, setting, and lore... the blissful lack of quicktime events... the ability to simply walk off a ledge or shoot a rope arrow at anything other than a predefined, highlighted location... the motivation to avoid guards (in a stealth game...
  7. What Deus Ex mods do you recommend?

Been meaning to try TNM. Also, the Malkavian mod.
  8. There *can* be two skies - convergent definitions of RPG

Alex: If you clarify that "shaping the character's role" involves making irreversible/costly choices, I think you could make that definition work for most cases. You'd end up making Deus Ex and System shock RPGs, but I guess that's acceptable. ME2 remains only partly an RPG, as your role...
  9. Statement as to recent site slowdowns and related issues

Blocking guests from seeing GD sounds like a good plan, server problems or no. We don't want to be attracting _more_ of the GD crowd, now do we? I wonder though, how many of those guests are here to read about Avatar 2 release date confirmed?
  10. RPGCodex list of most enjoyable games

    1. Deus Ex 2. Planescape: Torment 3. Thief 2 4. Unreal Tournament 5. Dungeon Keeper 2 6. Jagged Alliance 2 7. Starcraft ...and so on.
  11. Why are games so bloody easy these days?

Lysiander: Good posts -- preaching to the choir, maybe, but even the choir can appreciate a good preacher. The one thing i'm sorta hesitant to accept is that the existence of today's 'next-gen' stuff necessarily makes the 'good old days' model no longer feasible. Codex itself would seem to...
  12. Question: Would you buy, and how much would you pay?

As much as I'd pay for any game. :smug: Seriously though, so long as it's reasonably high-resolution so I can see what's going on without having to sit across the room or pull out a magnifying glass, i'm fine with anything, ascii and text-based stuff inclusive. That said, if i were choosing...
  13. Why do people think Dungeon Keeper 2 is the better game?

I've been playing through DK1 with keeperFX, haven't had any problems with the first 10 missions. Had to change the default resolutions though; my monitor can't do 320x200 so the game would crash at first. (win7 x64) Not quite understanding the hate for 2, but i guess it was my introduction...
  14. Why do people think Dungeon Keeper 2 is the better game?

Anyone try keeperFX? I got it running on win7 x64 but didn't have time to play any -- apparently it's basically an incremental update of DK1 for modern systems.
