I heard this little trick that works in such cases: don't buy the game.

attractive women in a game = porn

Thanks for clearing that up, damicore.

Imma go objectify women by making them form valuable friendships with members of their local community whilst gathering alchemic ingredients in a months-long effort to become a professional upon whom others can meaningfully rely for their health, wealth, and happiness and whose honed skills will, without exaggeration,

A lot of American TV shows include softcore porn scenes these days, so, yeah. Your horrible dream has already come to pass.

But that doesn't work. The Japanese keep doing it.

Don't know about these particular games, I just don't want to be treated like a 14 year old who needs to see pantyshots or characters design right out of a strip-club like the magician from the last star ocean.

They have sex scenes, not pantyshots, jiggly boobs or bikini armor.

The problem with them taking cues from ecchi is not the sex, it is how untasteful that portrayal of sexuality is. I'm not white knighting, I just find it tacky, immersion-breaking. It makes characters look like clowns all the time.

No, instead they have cleavage, butt shots, tight and revealing clothing, and actual bikinis.

Even Mad Men constantly put Christina Hendricks' boobs on display.

She could be in a burka and those bombs would still be on display. To be fair, he was really just complaining (with some hyperbole) that the anime art style sucks. It has its place in certain JRPG's, but it really shouldn't be as dominant as it is.

It all comes back to the simple fact that Japanese game developers are isolated, and too risk averse. Souls was an anomaly, and even its success wasn't enough to change the status quo.

And even then, compared to western developers, they are daring and inventive. This is the world we live in.

My problem is that I used to say that your average JRPG cast was not worse than your average Dragonlance/bunch of british knights cast, but the cast in particular in games like Criminal girls or Mugen Souls or your average Ar Tonelico is actually much, much worse than your average Dragonlance cast to the point that I couldn't play such games.

About anime art, I like some anime art and I definitely wish more JRPGs looked like Legend Of Mana, Breath Of Fire 3, Dragon Quest 8 (11), Valkyria Chronicles, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Ni No Kuni... Good anime is good, it's the abundance of moe or super edgy (when it's not even worse with a mix of moe and edgy once again like in Mugen Souls or criminal girls) which is problematic as far as I'm concerned.

Problem is there is this island nation of 120 something million people. With that much population you are going to have a substantial amount of people that are essentially goofs retards autists whatever you want to call them. Their animation industry fucked up big time by making animation character pornography for these retards and now its spilled over into their gaming market and degrading its quality.

Looks like now DMM Games (big online-centric Japanese publisher and distributor) is publishing on Steam. First game is a hack and slash action RPG called "OBCIDIAN" LEGACY.

How do people like you even find the Codex and in particular the JRPG subforum...

Also, have you checked out my Eroge thread? It's for the discreet sexually repressed man-child who-is-inexplicably-hounded-and-infantilized-by-the-art-style-of-Japanese-games-he-doesn't-even-play-and-knows-fuck-all-about, I think you'll find.

Let's not make this thread about me. You're also wrong about me, I have played many eroge and enjoyed them. Yuno is among my favorite games ever. I was mostly replying to this post:

That insinuates that you should want every piece of media you consume to try to arouse you.

No, thats not what he said. Point was that you are acting like repressed homosexual. Obviously just replace homosexual bit with JRPG artwork.

I don't care about graphics, it's gameplay that counts. And japanese developers know how to do it right. At least, most of the time. Maybe, because they don't hate games and gamers.

And i'll still take mugen souls animu art however generic it is over billionth pseudooldschoolcrudepixels of the western indies. At least in japanese generic games you can understand what happened on the screen.

More "info" about the 25th Anniversary of SMT. For those who missed it, the HD project is a new SMT game coming for the Nintendo Switch. The teaser had allusions to Nocturne and SMT4A with the new Odin redesign.

Edit: Apparently the HD Project is SMT5? That's what the trailers and people on the internet are calling it.

Don't think it'll be a Day 1 purchase, but owning the Switch will not be optional.

Will it be exclusive for the Switch?

Anything is possible, but I doubt it. As I said in the Switch thread in the GG sub, Atlus doesn't do multi plat games. The only games that they have done that are on multiple platforms are remakes. I'd just assume that it is exclusive unless they say otherwise. And pretty much every single SMT game has been exclusively on the Nintendo after the PS2 era. Persona 5 is the only one that wasn't.

So I impulse bought it on launch, which I hardly ever do. My verdict: It really is a labor of love, there's a lot of detail in the artwork, from the animations to the backgrounds. The game full of taoism and buddhism, lots of religious concepts are baked into the narrative and its presentation, along with martial law era taiwan culture and history (there's even a little bit that is in taiwanese). You don't need to be familiar with those to enjoy it though. Game-wise, it's very light on the puzzles and survival horror mechanics, you probably won't get stuck, but you can't sleepwalk through the game either. As for the horror, it's no Corpse Party, there's nothing too horrific here, no jump scares or anything like that. It's more about an eerie, creepy atmosphere with surreal weirdness. My only gripe is that the translation is quite inconsistent. Parts of it are florid and literary, other parts plain and terse. Parts are over-americanized, other parts not localized enough. I can't help but feel like I missed out on some of the nuances by not reading traditional chinese.

What now makes me interested in the Switch is that it is region free. I'm probably getting one if there are at least 10 games I want.

Fire Emblem Warriors is a maybe
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a likely purchase
    Dragon Quest XI
    The legend of Zelda: BotW
    Shin Megami Tensei Game
    Super Mario Odyssey
    Project Octopath Adventure
    (by the Bravely Default team)
