Anime JRPG combat vs western blobber style combat - Why all the hate?

What do you think of the classic JRPG combat system?

  • I love it, it is the best system ever

  • There were a few JRPGs with good combat, but they are mostly shit

  • The basic concept is good, it depends on how the devs use it

  • Kill all weeboo fans (Kingcomrade)

mondblut,

Dragon quest 3 on the Super Nintendo has way snappier combat than, say, Wizardry 6 on IBM PC. Not to mention a snappier interface.

Here, watch some late game Dragon quest 3:

Final fantasy 7 is hardly the be all and end all of jrpgs.

Yep, shows aimed at children air at 2AM.

Manchildren. Kids fighting with the power of love to protect my balls the world is bullshit for kids and that's it.

Stating that they automatically make games better is as retarded as saying the same thing about inventory management, or hit locations, or equipment durability.

Or everything that JRPG shit typically doesn't have, amirite? I like the one about inventory management. So, you'd argue that autoupgrade of gear is a also a thing that can be good because choosing your own gear is pointless?

I also think that it's not JRPG combat per se, but what usually comes with it - animu art, grind, shitloads of random filler fights and sometimes very limited tactical options.
Exactly.
The combat systems are pretty good sometimes. But the nonsensical stuff that sometimes accompanies it is unbearable.

The most disgusting and nonsensical thing that infects a lot of RPG's, but almost always mostly JRPG's is their messed up concept of how equipment "grades" work.

Shit like Gold armour beats silver armour beats iron armour. Do RPG makers in general have 0 concept of how metals work in real life, or are they just lazy people who want to drave kiddie-porn? (hint: the latter is true)

Fuck retarded developers who make up their own shit how different metals make weapons better instead of a characters skill in handling it.

Agreed

Can anyone recommend some RPGS with realistic metallurgy? Because this makes me SO FUCKING ANGRY

What? I've never played anything like that, can you give an example?

Ultima's super powerful weapons are Glass Swords, did Richard Garriott even do his research on weapon materials? Or was he too busy fulfilling his fetish for making the player kill children? (Hint: It's the Latter)

All TES games, though they thought they were clever and "circumvented" that by making up their own materials.

Pretty much all Final Fantasy games have this in some way. The later ones just gives us a lot of uninspired weapon designs which randomly/magically have higher ATT-stat.
Common occurence in JRPG's that equipment material go something like Iron -> Steel -> Silver -> Mythril before they start making up random stuff for elemental damage type weapons.

What are you on about? I've played more jrpgs with meaningful equipment choices than crpgs. Lufia 2's IP system and various slaying weapons provided some of the most interesting equipment options I've ever seen. What are you even comparing against? DnD systems with their fucking leather armour +1/2/3? Oblivion?

Closest thing I've seen to a western rog with decent equipment options would be roguelikes.

For that matter I could probably name more jrpgs with equipment durability than you could name crpgs. I doubt you could name a mechanic that's been done in western rpgs but not japanese ones.

Name weeaboo games with collar-grabbing, cover shooting and rat-diplomacy plis.
Chocobo's dungeon has collar grabbing, pretty much any grid tactics game has cover shooting (FFT?) and Elona doesn't just have rat diplomacy, you can marry the fuckers and have children.

Yeah, I downloaded the demo for that Etrian Odyssey 3DS game....christ, whoever designed those characters needs to be locked up. Like seriously. It's straight up pedo shit. I am not saying someone is a pedo for playing the games, but I would not be remotely fucking surprised if the artist responsible for that stuff gets arrested for child porn possession.

Also, anime and its tropes makes me want to puke. You can deny it all you want, but anime is primarily targeted to children, and it shows.

Go back to jacking off to your lolis. Manchildren still count as children.

I just hate anime/weebo/whatever graphics and characters. Used to love the old NES/SEGA/SNES jRPG's though especially stuff like Final Fantasy I & II, Shinning Force, Dragon Warrior, Phantasy Star...I think even then that anime stuff was there but I guess having only 8bits they couldn't go ape shit with it so it didn't bother me. Last Final Fantasy game I played was X, and oh man what a steaming pile of over emotional stupid looking ridiculous dog shit that was.

Saw a preview for the new FF game and doesn't seem like anything has changed either, in fact, I think it's getting worse and jRPG game developers are slowly loosing their collective minds.

Case in point:

http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/final...antasy_xvs_english_voiceover_is_terrible.html

Bunch of Justin Beber look-a-likes riding around in a car looking even less cool than the guys in Night at the Roxbury discussing how they could use with a bath. Seriously, what the fuck?

Never thought it was possible but it appears they finally have topped this abomination (in spoiler for your consideration and eye health):

There are quite literally a thousand things that bother me more than a realistic take on metallurgy, but anyways: Any rpg based on the 'the dark eye' setting.

Edit: Or are you asking specifically for jrpgs? Most jrpgs let you equip swords in the shape of planks, swords that have guns built-in, swords in the shape of keys... Can't tell for sure which of them get their metallurgy correct.

I imagine on some japanese forum someone is having a similar conversation regarding omnipresent gay sex in recent western games. I counter your flamboyantly metrosexual jrpg protagoanist with this:

Everyone with enough money to influence a big budget game has lost their minds.
