After the death of Blender Game Engine, they're going to work on tighter integration with external game engines:

To summarise, work will first be done in two areas;
- Implement a high quality real-time viewport with physics/event handling.
This should result in a pleasant & usable environment to setup and bake simulations.
- Design and prototype a new nodal logic system.

Related to this work is also to enable good support (export or some kind of integration) for external game engines such as Godot, Armory, Blend4Web, Unreal, Unity, etc.
I especially invite the first three (open source) projects to connect with us to find ways to keep a high level of compatibility.

Work on typical GE features such as super-fast drawing (LOD, etc) are welcome too but should be part of the regular work on Blender's viewport and our internal drawing engines. That way everyone benefits.

Btw Armory engine is kind of (not direct) successor to Blender Game Engine:

It looks promising, and soon to be released as free and open source.

Tilengine, C-based 2D retro graphics engine, is now fully open source:
https://github.com/megamarc/Tilengine
http://tilengine.org
C or Python :rage:

You get to choose between no abstractions and the slowest VM in the market.

EDIT:
User input in tilengine simulates a basic arcade setup, with for directions and four action buttons. It can be controlled with keyboard or joystick/gamepad:
Okay, yeah, not for me.

EDIT2:
External rendering [...] a locked OpenGL texture, an SDL video surface, a Java canvas...
Okay, back on the table.

I know in this thread there's a few developers with RoboVM-based published games on App Store.

You *must* update your game to latest RoboVM (2.3.5-SNAPSHOT) before iOS 12 is released, as previous versions will randomly freeze your game.

http://www.boundingboxsoftware.com/materialize/

What is it?

home_pic_01.png

Materialize is a stand alone tool for creating materials for use in games from images. You can create an entire material from a single image or import the textures you have and generate the textures you need.

What can it do?

• Diffuse -> Height
• Diffuse -> Metallic
• Diffuse -> Smoothness
• Height -> Normal
• Height + Diffuse -> Normal
• Normal -> Edge
• Normal -> Occlusion
• Normal + Height -> Occlusion
• Normal -> Height
• Seamlessly tile your textures.
• Save and load in a variety of formats.
• Automate many processes with clipboard commands in xml format.

home_pic_03.png

Who is using it?

home_pic_02.png

Materialize was used on the Uncharted Collection to generate metallic, smoothness, and occlusion textures to update most of the environment materials in Uncharted 1 and 2.

The automation features were developed to quickly open and save multiple texture files.

Umm, no... Unity only gives away free stuff if it's made free by the creators themselves or Unity devs made a demo.

For example, from the free things above I can see that in Asset Store Desert Dragon costs €31.26 and Water Mill Environment is a whopping €58.07.
And that's without VAT.

I have been developing a game with Unity and decided to give Unreal a try. These are my thoughts from a c++ perspective.
  • Poor API documentation. They have an API docs page, but it's just a list of classes and function signatures. No explanations or examples are given. To learn anything, you pretty have to look for tutorials on the Wiki or Youtube.
  • Intellisense in VS is just bad. It takes a while to work at all, and when it does you just get a giant list of suggestions. And of course it doesn't work on the many UE4 macros.
  • Compiling is slow and manual.
  • Compile errors are not very helpful. They don't even use the VS error window-you have to look in the Output window, which also has so much spam in it you have to hunt down where the actual error is. Then when you find the error, most of the time it's some nonsensical garbage which has nothing to do with what the actual error is. Compare to Unity where you just double click on the red error in the inspector and it takes you to the line of code causing it.
  • Errors will crash the editor. If you do something bad like reference a nullptr, the entire editor will crash. Then you have to restart it and begin the process of finding out what went wrong.
I do like Unreal. The feature set is nice and there is a lot of content(assets) for free, but coding for it has some quirks that make it slow to develop for.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I recently discovered a few tools to help with game design, writing and/or worldbuilding:-

Arcweave - browser based tool for narrative and game design.
World Anvil - online worldbuilding tool for tabletop RPG storytellers and authors.
Scabard - online tool to keep track of your RPG campaign.
Kanka - tool to worldbuild and manage your RPG campaign online.

For those unaware, Unity is having their May Madness sale for the Asset Store: https://blogs.unity3d.com/2019/05/01/unity-asset-store-the-may-madness-sale-is-on/
Some pretty good discounts on stuff. So far, I picked up uMMORPG and uRPG for $10 each to mess around with for lolz.

Still using Godot for my main project though. I wonder how easy it is to port Unity Asset Store stuff (like models, animations and such) to other engines. Anyone here tried that?

I think their licence doesn't allow using the asset in engines other than Unity.
