Yes, they could indeed turn out to be a threat if they aren't dealt with correctly.

I have full confidence in our diplomatic and trading capabilities.

I would hope our ambition has been tempered by our nearly Pyhrric victory over the greedy, scum-sucking, monopolistic bug bastards. I believe we have learnt a lesson of caution from that incident.

That is the sole reason why we aren't rushing over en masse to butt-rape the scaly lizard people with wings.

i'd strongly advise against option B. the Raumen are exceptionally cunning individuals and thus probably master subterfuges so the Phyr government is probably already infiltrated and manipulated by those filthy bugs (just think about it: they have pretty much taken over our economy in a couple of years... imagine what they could've done to the Phyrs with the headstart that they have. terrifying).

i vote for option C. their mysteriousness has some risks, but since that trait came through mostly from dealing with inferior (Phyr and Turanei) races or filthy bugs i almost expect them to be more friendly with Codexians. maybe they're "mysterious" 'cause they don't like those others and have been waiting for a true Master Race like us Codexians with which to partner and conquer the galaxy... just sayin'

Actually, it took them the better part of thirty years, and we were recovering from a war effort that had drained our reserves. Add to the fact that we seemed overly eager to trust the bugs by wholeheartedly embracing trade with them barely years after finding out we were not so different, you and I. Not underestimating a rival is a good trait, but we shouldn't overestimate their capabilities.

That the Raumen may have already monopolized their markets doesn't mean we will not be able to gain anything of note. The Phyrries are ambitious bears. Bears love honey. Therefore, we can offer them what bees can't and induce them to open their markets to us. Like honey.

AND SHINY BEADS!

Admiral threave is right, we can offer them much more than the Raumen ever was able to.

We could probably even assimilate them.
Something we could never do with the crystalline creatures.

Forget the bugs, war hero Jack. Forget the pain of your war injuries.

Go soothe yourself in a furry, curvy bear-lady's six-armed embrace. Things will be better from now on. You may even have a litter. All for Codexia's relationship with the Phyrries, hero.

Whoa whoa whoa, stay your hand. He's still a war hero. He should be rewarded. To compensate for his loss against the bugs, we are giving him the chance to be our ambassador to the Phyrries. Who better to contact another alien race than one who has lost so much, given so much (he gave his smile, for chrissakes! He will never smile again!), to aliens?

:salute:

And he will have his vengeance, in this world or the next.

God damnit. I knew something bad would happen, we should have focused more on research. We wouldn't have to consider going to bed (metaphorically... i hope) with furries in order to stop being bug-dependant economically. If it comes to war, there will be a court martial held, gentlemen.

And it always comes to war. :smug:

Anyway, i'll vote C just because mysterious aliens always fascinated me. Who knows what wonders we could unlock by making contact with these strange creatures, what advances could be done? It's a path worth exploring. If not now, then perhaps in the future.

I will handle our first contact personally to see to it that nothing goes wrong.

As a battered veteran I can probably establish our supermacy.

Our most learned diplomats and my honor guard will accompany me to their homeworld.

Gentlemen, I hope this will be a most successful mission.

FOR CODEXIA!

Pff-AH.

Actually, i wonder what worthwhile goods our new, fluffy friends will have in exchange for the marvels we have to offer?

Ambitious fluffy friends.

If that means giving their leader the official rank of "Supreme General and Great Leader of the Grand Phyrrie Empire, Eternal Friend to the Respected Codexian State", some shiny beads and honey in return for their unwavering allegiance, I'm all for it.

Well, jokes aside, we should not underestimate their intelligence or cunning. Proceed cautiously until Ambassador Jack can plumb the depths of their potential. Thoroughly.

Codexia uber alles: Genetic Intermission

***

Gentlemen, intermission updates do not disrupt the timeline of the game, they merely inform future choices and flesh out the universe. Therefore, consider the following, before we continue with the furry saga (which will be the subject of the next update).

***

The period of 160-185AU would come to be characterized by a widespread economic recovery, followed by an outright boom across Codexian space. A multitude of novel goods and services hit the market with aplomb, tearing away savagely at rising disposable incomes. High fidelity, virtual reality gaming would rake in multi-billions over those decades. Omni-customized designer drugs kept the wealthy on preternatural highs for months at a time - or for as long as their carefully secreted personal credit accounts held out. And the government quickly learned that some pleasures had to be controlled, and that some vices required forceful suppression. Heavy taxes were introduced, many substances and dangerous items were criminalized. Yet there was no fad as widespread - no service that could boast of similar levels of market saturation - as body modding (modification of physical/genetic characteristics).

It all started innocently enough; a road paved with good intentions. We had access to low-level genetic tampering techniques previously, but it was not until Raumen medtech experts found employment in fertility clinics, cosmetic surgeries and dermatological treatment centers that Pandora's Box creaked open. Their knowledge unlocked our genetic markers with remarkable ease. Soon enough, gen-mods available to the public ranged from genetically superior offspring (illnesses and genetic flaws became easy to screen for and, for but a few thousand extra credits, particular features could be improved), to natural changes in hair color across just about the entire visual spectrum. More complex procedures gained ground soon enough, with bio-mods allowing almost complete customization of the human body. The first four-armed Codexian was 'born' in 177AU. Cybernetic tech-mods, used for many years in the military, also proliferated. The ability to 'jack' into a computer system, as well as cybernetic augmentation of human capabilities, was finally offered to the public during this time.

Price, in truth, was the only limiting factor to the practice of modding. The government, as usual, was a few years behind the state of the social art, and prevaricated on introducing regulation repeatedly. We had learned nothing from our popular culture of earlier centuries, that much was now obvious. Social pressures eventually forced the government's invisible hand when 'purist' rioters clashed repeatedly with the 'modded' on several worlds, but especially so on Codexia itself. Deaths were reported. Some purist businesses then stopped offering services to those with ascertainable mods. A major social rift threatened, with purists/the poor on one side and the modded on the other. How would the crisis be handled?

Do you...

A. Decree that all mods be banned henceforth (or otherwise heavily regulated), aside from cases with special dispensation.

B. Allow regulated gen-mods, but no others.

C. Allow regulated bio-mods, but no others.

D. Allow regulated tech-mods, but no others.

E. Allow all mods, as was the case previously, championing the right of Codexians to lead their lives as they will.

Ambassador Jack, I hope? with a proper escort of armed-to-the-teeth battlecruisers? Ala Diplomacy in Commodore Perry's style? Diplomacy over the gun's barrel?
That happens to be my expertise, yes.

I'm the one that Codexia sends when they wish to make an impression.

I'm not sure what to make of that but I will.

I'm not quite sure where to stand in this question.
On one hand I don't want to see an uprising because of mods, on the other hand I don't want to see Codexia in ruins after the mods have gotten out of control.

I'm not sure if I should even vote, seeing as I am myself heavily augmented.

The purity of our gene-seed is at risk.

I am more and more wary of the Raumen Agenda. Proliferated gen-mods and bio-mods threatens the identity of our fledging space nation. With the existence of various other aliens out there, we are not ready to accept genetic and biological modification on such a large scale. Maybe later, in a more mature empire, we may indulge in such doings, but right now it will only lead to decadence, hubris, and multi-headed dicks. We are not ready.

Technological modification, however, is acceptable with the proper regulation - it is easier to regulate on our part, after all.

D. Allow regulated tech-mods, but no others

We have the technology, but we can not trust our fellow Codexians to use it responsibly. Gen-mods and bio-mods should be restricted for certain government projects, and not available to the public.

edit: I do understand that with the proper genetic and body modifications we can appear to other organic aliens as they do to improve diplomatic relations, if that is what we wish to be - a giant gaping pussy accepting all and sundry as part of it.

edit2: You are a tech-mod, war hero Jack, your injuries inflicted upon you by the Raumen who then proceeded to open the Pandora's box of gen-mods in our healthcare services. There is nothing harmless in interfacing better with technology that we have created ourselves.

Once again you have proven to be an invaluable asset to Codexia, admiral.

D.
It is a reasonable compromise.

or spies... :smug:

since only one option can be chosen, D seems like the best one as explained by fellow councilman treave... although gen-mods for eliminating diseases and genetic impurities should also be widely available to purify our bloodline.

Well, I believe these merely concerns the mods available to the public. Gen-mod and bio-mod technology should still be available to the government's clandestine agencies should they desire to create a Codexian multi-headed dick warrior wielding a dozen monoblades and spitting corrosive acid from the apertures on its heads.

That is power we should not leave in the hands of the public. Bear in mind that our clinics are employing Raumen med-experts. Do we really want alien hands to be involved in modifying our Codexian kinsfolk?
