Tags: n-Space; Sword Coast LegendsIn a press release released last week, we learned about a new RPG that was going to be announced on February 12, developed in cooperation by two companies you've probably never heard of, n-Space and Digital Extremes. n-Space is apparently staffed by several ex-Bioware devs, including Dan Tudge, director of Dragon Age: Origins. Both in the original press release and a subsequent interview at GameSpot, they were eager to proclaim that this would be an RPG based on an "oldschool" IP that would satisfy "hardcore" RPG fans. Several of our readers immediately concluded that this was going to be a new D&D game, and that it would be popamole. They were at least half-right. Introducing Sword Coast Legends:
About the Game
Set in the lush and vibrant world of the Forgotten Realms, Sword Coast Legends offers an all-new way to enjoy the time-tested magic of playing Dungeons & Dragons as a shared storytelling experience. With a deep narrative developed by a team of long-time industry veterans and a partnership with Wizards of the Coast, the single player campaign of Sword Coast Legends brings the world of Faerûn home like never before.
Sword Coast Legends also brings the roleplaying dynamic between players and Dungeon Masters to life with DM Mode, a first-of-its-kind real-time experience in which Dungeon Masters guide players through unique customizable adventures. In DM Mode, the Dungeon Master engages players and empowers them to have fun in a way that suits the party best while creating a tailored, non-adversarial 4 with 1 experience that any RPG or pen-and-paper fan will enjoy.
Game Features:
More details are available at the game's website and in a new interview at IGN. So, what to make of this? The developers mentioned Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur's Gate, but I'd say that the first games that come to mind here are Neverwinter Nights and Divinity: Original Sin. I don't know if this game is going to be good, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have existed if not for all the good things that have happened to the genre over the past two years. We shall cautiously await more information. Sword Coast Legends is scheduled to be released this year on PC, and is available for pre-order at a variety of Kickstarter-like price tiers, the cheapest of them $40 (currently with a $5 discount). I wonder if Feargus Urquhart's recent rant about D&D had anything at all to do with this...
Update: Sword Coast Legends now has a Steam page, with a release date of Q3 2015.
