Now that Oblivion is the obvious next-gen cat's pajamas, it's expected that ambitious young developers will want to emulate it's style & success in some form. Majestic Studios (yes, that's a Geocities link) have gone so far in their emulation as to steal scenes from Oblivion down to the actual textures in their fantasy adventure Limbo of the Lost. GamePlasma called them out on it today:

The first example of this can be seen in the screenshots from Oblivion and Limbo of the Lost below. Notice how everything is placed in exactly the same place and almost all of the textures are identical. In fact, the only real difference is the quality of the texture and overall graphical look. Even the portrait that can be seen under the stairs is exactly the same as the one that can be found in Oblivion. Also, take note of the placement of the rug in the middle of the floor and the placement of the stairways. These similarities lead to many questions. How rampant are situations like this in games that fall under the radar of the typical gaming crowd?

Now publisher Tri Synergy is washing their hands of Majestic in this press release just sent out:

Sharon, MA, May 11th, 2008 – Tri Synergy, Inc. (www.trisynergy.com) would like to publish an official comment regarding recent comparisons of level design and artwork between Majestic Studios’ Limbo of the Lost and Bethesda ’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion/Eidos Interactive’s Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Tri Synergy is just as shocked as everyone else is by the recent screenshot comparisons. At no point during our dealings with Majestic Studios up until the point that the comparison was first publicly made by a third party did we have any knowledge of these similarities. Additionally, Tri Synergy will discontinue distribution of Limbo of the Lost in both retail and online outlets.

We have contacted the developer, Majestic, and are anxiously awaiting their response. As soon as we know more on this matter we will issue another statement.

Say what you want about Majestic's intelligence and integrity, they must have balls the size of Godzilla's (if Godzilla wasn't female).

stealing from Oblivion? more like the brains the size of chicken's
there are much more well-designed games from which they could steal

they should've stolen art only from Thief 3 then. in that case nobody would've complained and filed lawsuits

Of all the games, why rape Oblivion when it was already raped in the art department when it first came out?

I just don't get it

Allegations are flying across several forums, including NeoGAF, that the 2D point and click adventure further "borrows" from a truly staggering amount of other titles, including:

* Epic's Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004 (PC)
* Konami's Silent Hill series
* Lionhead's Black & White 2 (PC)
* Blizzard's Diablo 2 (PC)
* Troika's Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (PC)
* Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (PC, Xbox)
* The 1997 film Spawn

It is again worth noting that work first began on Limbo in 1995. It was then put on hold and, going by the game's site, restarted in 2002.

* State of the art graphics
* Immersive (being there) sound effects
* Full musical score
* Devious Puzzles
* Play and Reveal storyline
* Each Level feels different in play
* Spectator gameplay - You do not control the main character, you ask him to do certain actions, actions that sometimes he will or will not do.
That sounds... Really, really lame.

->> Pick up the flashlight
"I do not wish to do that"

->> Pick up the God-damned flashlight
"Maybe I will do so later"

->> Get the fucking flashlight or I'll uninstall
"I have picked up the flashlight"

Truly exciting gameplay.

This is unbelievable. Sure they didn't think they could get away with that?
Right?

Who says they didn't get away? If they were payed and the contract doesn't have some kind of plagiarism cause for giving back the money, it would only be the publisher who really is at a loss.

Good point. They may have been milking this and expected it to be revealed as a sham at some point.

The game seems pretty decent: Just Adventure review.
But they should have been more consistent with their pilferings, using their own stuff for Chapter 4 was a bad move :wink: :

In the visual department LotL follows its mixed bag recipe to the letter, at least when it comes to the backgrounds. Therefore, your eyes will feast on very beautiful scenery in chapter 3 as well as graphics resembling amateur adventure games in chapter 4.

I say good on 'em for using a bit of ingenuity to get a game 13 years in development out the door. Hope they get away get away with it.

Finding art assets, or creating your own, has been the bane of Indie development in the first place. Many people get stuck in the crux of identity when they cannot reliably use graphics of moderate level. This is by far one of the most interesting work arounds for such issues. Certainly they shouldn't have the right to publish this, but as someone working on a game, these art assests would be great filler work if someone wanted to work on the back end code, mechanics, etc. Pretty interesting, but shame on them for publishing such a thing!

Although, I doubt these guys used anything beyond Oblivion's construction set to make the game, so meh, never mind.

You're wrong. They apparently used Wintermute Engine as foundation of their game. And probably some other applications.

There's plenty of libraries available for people with zero talent/budget to use these days, if they can be bothered to look; from simple game maker type programs, through to entry/novice friendly 3D applications like Poser and Bryce - where there's shit loads of free texures, models, scenes, animations, etc available.

Then to hell with them? Still, I find it as an interesting way to start quick work on a project. Place holder, next-gen graphics could do quite a bit.

But of the same quality? And geared toward a specific theme, such as high fantasy?
