Playing Baldurs Gate 2 with mods.....

OK, Ive been bored, and Ive decided I want to play a game that is really tough and challenging, where there are lots of cool items to loot.

So, Ive decided to replay BG2. Now, I was wondering, what are the best tactical combat mods for it?

Also, are there any mods that add QUALITY content to the game, such as encounters, sidequests and new areas?

Also, what are the good item/store mods for the game?

Ascension is a must. You could try the Tactics mod too, but beware that most of the stuff in the mod is in the "cheesy hard" category rather than in the "satisfactory challenge" category.

I've played a bit with Sword Coast Stratagems II. It mainly improves the AI, rather than changing a bunch of encounters to be ridiculously overpowered (like putting angels and demons in the first dungeon for you to fight; I think Tactics does that). It makes the game a fair bit more difficult, but not ridiculous.

The one thing is that it just makes the combat with mages (which is mainly what gets beefed up) even more of a case of, "do you have the right anti-protection spells prepared?" For instance, I don't think I got past the first ogre magi fight in the first dungeon without having someone with an invisibility purge and some luck. But, if that's your bag, have at it.

Tactics, like most of Weimar's stuff, is all about massive powergaming. If your PC isn't a Sorcerer or Kensai/Mage, you're boned. I'd avoid it like the plague, because instead of an actual challenge, you pretty much have to play with some serious exploits and cheese tactics.

Ascension is pretty good. It pumps up all the fights in Throne of Bhaal that felt a little...weak. Illasera, Yaga Shura, Abazigal, and Balthazar all become a lot less of the jokes they were. The last fight and Demogorgon were made even harder, and there's even an option to convince Balthazar to join you for those with high enough wisdom, charisma, and reputation. And it's challenging enough. Put it this way, one of the fights is against two dragons at once, one of whom has a ton of psychic abilities.

Sword Coast Stratagems 2 increases the difficulty by optimizing the AI scripting. It doesn't make them cheesy, just makes them use the abilities they have much more efficiently. Heck, the normal AI scripts in the Baldur's Gate games never used a good portion of some enemies' abilities.

Unfinished Business adds in a bunch of small, unimplemented dialogues, quests, encounters, and items. It will add enough to make for some new stuff. And it's not intrusive.

The fixpacks are good too. Other than that, avoid everything like the plague. NPC mods add in terrible munchkins with powergaming battles and stupidly powerful items....in addition to writing that makes Bioware look like Dostoevsky. Quest mods are Tactics-style powergaming. Romances and flirt packs....why the hell would you want those unless you're a masochist?

First get Dungeon be gone mod.
that will alow you to skip irenicus dungeon.

The get the unfinished business mod to expand the story and quests that were meant to be in.

If you try tactics be aware that you can freely choose among its components so you dont have to install every enhanced opponent.
Improved Bodhi is really tough for example.

I played it and it was good though i hear there are other mods that concentrate more on the AI and stuff...

Like awesome Sword Coast Stratagems II

get the Solafen NPC mod because it adds to the story.
get that vampire chick as NPC mod if you want to side with Bodhi before going to Spellhold Asylum (cant remember the name now but you meet her in game when she delivers messages from Bodhi...damn it, something with a V...) Valen!

Must have is Ease of use which has many excellent components one of which is giving you to play ALL strongholds.

And bugger it all here is the whole list of them at this excellent forum

Stratagems is good. The Fixpack and Tweakpacks have some good stuff although some you may want to avoid (like the "balanced Shapeshifter" mod in the Tweakpack). You may also want to use the level1NPC mod just for convenience.

Play Icewind Dale II. It's tougher than Baldur's Gate II and it's not BioWare crap.

Get:

1)DungeonBeGone
2)SCSII
3)Ascension
4)Unfinished Business
5)DOQuestpack (Some cheesy stuff in here but good overall)
6)Tower Of deception (D&D remake adventure add-on)
7)BanterPack

I've experimented quite a bit with all the various mods and I find the above setup to be the most complete and challenging one without being ridiculously difficult or cheesy. To save you some trouble from determining install order and the like I am posting my WEIDU log: (This installation worked fine for me, bug-free as far as I could tell).

Be warned that if you choose to install the pre-buffs for enemy mages and clerics, as I
did, you'll probably find some battles really challenging, espexially the ones in the Planar Sphere with Lavok and Tolgerias. You may want to leave those until you cleared-up everything else in Chapter 2.

Happy gaming!

Tactics, Improved Battles, SCSII and Improved Anvil are the 'leading' general combat difficulty upgrades.

Tactics is good but if you care about that stuff, the AI cheats a lot. It also loads up on munchkin in several areas.

Improved Battles is like Tactics but more, like when you go to Texas and they fry your fried crap.

SCSII is by far the best, but runs a fuckload of scripts, and on a lot of computers will lag you when you load a new area or begin an encounter.

Impr. Anvil is stupid hardcore, in the sense that kobolds will kill you with their foot hair. IMO it's pointless being that punishing and dry.

Some necessary mods would include DungeonbeGone (skips Irenicus Dungeon but gives you the quests, etc); Unfinished Business; Banter Pack; IEP Banters (which I think might be compatible with the former)

In addition to Ascension there are mods such as Turnabout (allows you to call up dead people to your aid, cause in Ascension Melissan does that); The Longer Road (Irenicus playable in TOB, 'redeems' him. sounds stupid but is very well written and well scripted. Irenicus is way too powerful, though).

Skip any and all NPC mods unless you like reading the equivalent of Gaider fan fiction.

Tower of Deception is pretty good, there are some others but really depends on your taste. There is Assassinations, a series of ten assassination quests with some creative design; some decentish ones like Desecration of souls, The Wheels of Prophecy and Tortured Souls (i forget though).

But if you'd somehow manage to survive, then it's your obligation to make an LP about the mod. Think of it as something like becoming a supervillain.

Because of lack of any good RPGs lately.

And because of the very apparent replay value BG2 has with all these hundreds of mods from small to total conversions out there?

Because its better then anything bioware or bethesda made ever since?

What about the various "megamods" like darkest day and others?

"Play Icewind Dale II. It's tougher than Baldur's Gate II"

L0L Only if youa re a pussy. IWD2 -of what I played of it - was easy. A huge dissapointment story, and combat wise compared to its predessor.

To claim it's 'tougher' than BG2 is retarded. Plain, and simple. It's barely tougher than TOEE, or KOTOR.
