Who cares that CD Projekt is nice enough to release a game without any sort of DRM?

This is what it has come to. People are so used to being raped with DRM shit, doing without, which used to be the norm, is now considered "nice". It's not like developers/publishers have anything to gain financially from having DRM, especially since most are cracked day one. It's a faith healing scam. It only makes sense to not have DRM in the first place, unless you go for a method that actually works on some level, like that of Stardock.

Gotta give it to the DRM developers. Their lobbying crusades must have paid off greatly as the DRM craze ramped up in the last 6 years. It must have been a massive financial incline for them.

When exactly was no DRM 'the norm'? I remember playing Amstrad CPC games in the 80s where you had to type certain words from the manual in order to pass the check. I remember Monkey Island coming with two rotating paper discs of pirate pictures which you had to match to what was being shown on screen in order to get the proper code. So, when was this magical time when the games had no drm?

Those can not be considered DRM in the modern sense, ie. anything ranging from spyware that profiles you for publishers to bloatware that decrease performance or causes glitches in your OS to the draconian online activation schemes for even single player games. So a better question might be, when did this DRM of the yore snitch your gaming habits to the publishers, required you to install useless shit on your system or demand you give the publisher a phone call to receive your activation code for the game?

This is why we can't have nice things - like a freely adjustable camera - in modern games.

I used to think alike but does anyone remember any 3D game where a freely adjustable camera didn't ever hinder the game? After playing several games with freely adjustable camera, I've come to find that there is such a thing as too much camera freedom in 3D. Sinking extra time managing it every time you turn a corner or get into a fight and the like gets annoying. 3D cams need smart design over too much or too little freedom.

I love StarCraft 2's camera. It could allow some zooming out perhaps but not once I found myself struggling to see something due to the camera angle or wrestling to adjust it.

Just put some good old fashioned "look-this-up" copy protection. People don't seem to care about manuals anymore.

I actually doubt they can read them at all.

This is without doubt the best idea in this thread. :incline:
And if reading is teh hard, make 'em, I dunno, match the pirates' faces on a rotating wheel or something, in the manner of Monkey Island 1.

There is a difference between copy protection and DRM. DRM means managing the product after you sell it to the customer, meaning the company is still in control. Internet authorizations and clients are DRM, but a disc check or manual code is just copy protection.

/read thread

Just because some devs say something about legal and shit and you want to torrent them out of spite? You guys are so easily trolled somehow.

Ever heard of the concept "Doesnt worth the bandwidth to download it"? Or "Install, play 15min, uninstall and never look back since"?

Wonder what will be on the hard copies. Still day one buy for me. Liked the first one, and read the books.
Still think it might even backfire on them, because companies dealing with such thing often brake privacy rules, and there where people falsely accused for piracy.

We designed the game in that way, that eventual console version of Witcher 2 won't force us to change the interface, redesign the gameplay, controls and so on. We attempted to [project the game in that way] that making a console version would be really easy for us.

No point and click interface and no "isometric" camera
Well, pseudo-isometric view was pretty useless anyway in Witcher.
:smug:

Still, I feel the urge to just grab the guy (by his collar, no less) and slap some sense into his face.

If anything, the interface and controls are the very fucking things that absolutely need to be different between consoles and PCs, because they use completely different input methods (several retards connecting their x-pox con-trollers to PC to play FPP games notwithstanding) and have completely different display capabilities (with even the *gasp* HD being pretty meh from our point of view). This may imply necessity of differences in gameplay (for example I can't fathom someone playing STALKER using console controler, I just can't), but first and foremost means that the interface and controls used for one will be completely unsuitable for the other. It's as retarded as trying to design a winter jacket that also makes a good swimming suit.

:rage:

Besides, see how well received was console interface in PC oblivious. There was a reason for dozens of interface mods springing like mushrooms after the rain soon after the game hit the shelves.

:x

And bioware dialogue in style and depth/intelligence.
Now you're just speaking out of your ass.

True, but the principle is still the same. The paying customer is forced to jump through hoops to play the game, while the pirate has no such problem. If I bought the game and I lose the manual I'm screwed, the pirate can continue playing without problems. Copy protection is certainly much more intrusive these days, but only because technology has evolved.

Not that I don't doubt Witcher 2 will improve on the first but why are so many people championing Witcher? It's arguably less of an RPG than Fallout 3 and its combat is actually worse -- and that's saying something. People worried about CD Projekt 'selling out' or getting absorbed... yet they already put out a product similar to what EA and Bethesda publish.

Because Fallout 3 come after Oblivion and Witcher 2 come after The Witcher 1? High expectation and all that.

Bethesda is consistently doing the same shit they've been doing for years: Morrowind and its addons, now Oblivion. Bad(?) as Fallout 3 is, it's better than what they've produced. While CDProjekt has made only one so far and the Witcher released during the worst drought of RPG the world ever seen. No wonder people has high expectation for them.

World of Warcraft. It lets you zoom way out or play in 1st person. Hell it even has click-to-move. Nobody uses it, but it's there. Ofc the area design helps, as it's mostly outdoors/huge halls, but even in tight spaces the camera adjusts intelligently and requires minimal maintenance.

Bottom line is, it does require that extra amount of effort to implement options and make them all viable, but why bother when you have morons telling you that iso has no place in arpgs?

Suing torrenters most certainly works in Germany.
Appr. 30-40% pay the ca. 600 EU fine and sign the tacked on, very broadly worded, fuck me in my ass, cease and desist letter. The court proceedings cost 200 for the lawyers. According to leaked emails, english logger firms get 10% of the profit. So thats 400 clean split between the lawyers and right holders per letter.
Last year saw 200.000 to 300.000 letters with mostly music and porn. Only 200 court battles. Latest pirated game cost a dude 1200 EU in court but thats not for downloading but for worldwide redistributing, eg torrent. 1 song on torrent is 15 EU as of now.

Zuxxez, potato rights holder "cease and desist"ed a lot of people for Earth 2160 and Two Worlds. Prolly made more profit from it than by selling it in motherland Poland.

Here is a list of all known titles that get extorted:
http://abmahnwahn.homeip.net/Gesamtlist ... Werke.html

I myself got a 650 EU letter for Buttmans Nordic Blondes. I WAS NOT GUILTY!
So I sent in a modified c and d letter, admitting no guilt, and didnt pay. Never got a response.

Because it is an ACTION-RPG and it is not needed.
There is a ton of things you can add to a game, but you do not always need to.
Her is some food for thought. Should a developer put more time and effort into fixing bugs, adding atmosphere, better combat or putting in a unnecessary and useless isometric camera.

Yeah? I never remember any code for unlocking the missions or for patches. Secondly, the EE came out a year after the original, so it made little sense to have any kind of serious copy protection when the EE content was given away for free.
Actually, downloading TW1 patches and others goodies originally required a website account with a registered game serial - same for upgrading to EE, which even had some simple online verification prior to installation.

I see, well there you have it, that's what they still should do. I got it late though and so didn't seem to need to register at all.

pirates gonna pirate, DRM has never had anything to do with it.

isn't going to kill the industry. isn't going to have any effect at all.
Lots of games that have had really obnoxious DRM have had some of the highest piracy ratings.

Btw, does anyone know the sale of the Witcher 1 versus illegal downloads?

Unfortunately im not. If you can put aside all the "CD projekt is awesum PC RPG company!!1!!!" bullshit and just look at the game, the dialogues that are presented so far what do you see?

Youll see Geralt tricking guards in prison by saying "hey, im innocent." :retarded:
Which somehow makes them go into his cell so he can beat them up and whatever.

then youll see that "boob" lady agreeing to help him even after he killed her son. Why? because Geralt told her it was a fair fight. right?
fair fight?

-Hey you killed my son.
It was a fair fight.
-Oh...ok then. Ill help you.

I mean... What the fucking fuck!?

Second, they went with Bioware dialogue style in its presentation which also affects the quality of it.

So no, im not talking out of my ass.

What the fuck is wrong with you you fucking faggot.

Of course there is not going to be a Isometric camera becaus it is not fucking needed in a Action rpg where you control one guy you goddam cocksucking doucebag.
Next your going to bitch about the lack of Isometric camera in Stalker or Tekken.
It will have most of the same interface as the first witcher with slight modifications and options, but over all it is the same thing.
I have a brain unlike you hypesucking retard bacteria.
And since youre a retard your opinion that isometric camera is not needed is as retarded as you.

Also, you have no idea what interface it will have. It certainly doesnt have point and click interface but then again youre a complete retard so its not surprising you cant even understand what everyone can see in all the gameplay videos they released so far.

Suck shit dumbfuck.

I played the first Witcher with the third person cam, isometric was the retarded option thanks to the NWN engine that shouldn't have existed there (in ARPG) in the first place.

Also, lets be realistic here. Without console release, CDP will be shutting down their offices or selling out to Acitivion or EA in a few years like other PC-RPG developers in the past. At least we can take solace in the fact that they want to create PC version as the best even if they plan to port it to consoles in the future. In comparison, go and ask BioWare to prioritize PC version over consoles for ME3 or DA2 (hell, Dragon Age started as a PC only RPG and look at what happened to it in the end) in their forums.

So a vote (with wallet) for CDP is a vote for PC gaming. :salute:
Wow, what a load of bullshit.
First i played the game from isometric PoV and i find third person the most crappy one.

Second, they didnt shut down even if first game was PC only and they run into trouble only when they tried to port it to consoles.

And third, they just said they designed the game for consoles you dumbfuck.

Thats why there will be qte`s, thats why dialogue is the same as in mass effect, why there wont be point and click and thats why you wont have an option to choose which PoV you like best but have something that automatically adjusts.

Thing is CDP are bucking the trend and saying "let's make the game on PC first and foremost

But... didn't this developer we're talking about just state, in an interview that I think was even linked in this thread, that they specifically designed The Witcher 2 as a console game, so that they wouldn't have to do any work when/if they released it on consoles later on? Why are people so eager to defend the company as this last bastion of oldschool PC gaming or some such?
