You heard it here first: Freelancer is a RPG.

At least according to jewtewberz:

and what´s the big difference? I haven´t played X3 yet, but want it, but i can´t imagine that it´s sooooo different from Freelancer... xD

buy X3 Terran Conflict.

Freelancer is an RPG type of game. While x3 is more economy base and reputation base. In freelancer you follow a story, while in x3 you make your story. you end up with huge commercial fleets, stations, and can destroy everything arround.

Fucktastic!!

Why not post this in Best Thread Ever pt. 2 instead of making one for itself? Not exactly ground-breaking that someone mistakes a sandbox game with vague character progression for an RPG.

Also, Freelancer is a pretty cool game. I replayed it a month ago and had as much fun as my first time through it.

Freelancer was sandbox ???
And you dont have to go through story missions to raise your tech level ? You must have been playing some different Freelancer then.

loved Freelancer, it was sandbox after the main quest, before it was kinda limited where you could go, your level depended on wealth iirc

No, it was dependent on story. You couldnt buy anything powerful, until you advanced the story enough.

Surely World Cup 98 didn't have an injury button? As in, press it to activate injury causing moves?

Best football game ever, you could set the referee's authority all the way down and push him around the field without punishment.

I guess you could play Freelancer on a persistent multiplayer server as a free roaming / sandbox game.

Sort of like a MMO but with only 128 players.

Honestly, how is Freelancer any less of an RPG than so-called aRPGs like Mass Effect or Alpha Protocol?

Duh.

You can't customize your face or your clothes in Freelancer.

This hits the nail on the head of all LARPfags, powergamers and "Hurr Durr AP Is a RPG because you can choose whether to be EXTREME or Sexy in dialogues":

What people need to realize is that ALL ELECTRONIC GAMES HAVE STATS, and therefore also all action games. The difference is that in some of them the stats are more prominent and more visible than in others.

[...](Even the Elder Scrolls games are little more than stat-heavy action games, the only difference being that progression through them is not entirely linear. The main plot, however, is still virtually unchangeable by the player, hence they cannot be viewed as RPGs.)

You could, with mods. The vanilla game post-campaign is boring as hell, but Discovery for example can be great fun for a while even in SP mode (it's primarily made to be played on a persistent MP server). It has a shitload of new systems/ships/weapons/enemies/trade commodities etc., you could spend ages just exploring and charting out the galaxy.

Check it out at http://discoveryfl.com/

If you're looking to play on the official mod servers, the mods are very strict and ban-happy about everyone staying in-character at all times (the most popular one at least was fully RP); not for everyone, but I for one appreciated the lack of 'rofllolo i pwn uu1!' in the chat window and even in private messages.

Hated Freelancer. World felt dead, customisation was limited and missions were really repetitive. Never tried multiplayer.

I enjoyed the game, it had a decent enough story and the gameplay wasn't that bad (Far too easy though)

No, it was dependent on story. You couldnt buy anything powerful, until you advanced the story enough.

there are plenty of segments in the game where you are given freedom to go wherever do whatever in it, after attaining a certain level of wealth (level is dependent on wealth, though sometimes the storyline will advance you as well) you get called in for main-plot missions -- but you don't have to answer those immediately and can still go about your way.

All those times Juni says "go get some work, we'll need money" is just time they give you to do whatever to build up your level - and once you hit the next level, she calls you in for more work.

Powerful Gear was dependent on where you looked for it, the game had set it up so the planets you come in contact with have scaled gear as you progress through them. That is, you weren't going to find anything note-worthy in Liberty space. Iif you used your free time to head over to the outlaw bases and do some jobs for 'em (to gain reputation and money enough) you could buy super heavy fighters early on. I don't know if you can get to Rheinland space right off the bat after getting the freedom to use jump-gates, but if so, you could get the Valkyrie or Banshee before even putting the main plot into motion.

It would just require you to have meta-game knowledge and to power-game the fuck out of the already rather grind-heavy game.

It was a neat distraction for the week or so it takes to play through and entertaining if you wanted some pew pew pew in what is basically GTA in space lite.

So according to this article no RPG's exsist on PC? That's helpful.
