<p>Those lucky bastards at Gamespot were able to play the current build of Massive's <a href="http://www.worldinconflict.com/main/" title="WiC">World in Conflict</a> at E3 this week. Best of all, they got to throw some nukes around.</p><blockquote><p>Though we had seen the nuke in action previously, actually using it turned out to be a highly satisfying experience (or at least, an uncomfortably guilty pleasure, given the state of real-world affairs in the current international climate). Nukes in World in Conflict come streaming out of the sky just slowly enough to see them coming (but too quickly to evacuate your troops, in most cases). These awesome weapons create a gigantic explosion that can wipe a medium-sized town from the face of the Earth with a humongous, fiery mushroom cloud that's visible from pretty much anywhere on the map (and since the game has been developed by the creators of the already large-scale Ground Control series, that's saying something). Nukes can also completely wipe out a player's contingent; when placed well, they can completely eliminate several players' forces at once. </p></blockquote><p>For some reason, nuclear weapons never seem boring to me. Maybe it's because of growing up in the '80s and watching Wargames over and over.</p><p>Read: <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/worldinconflict/news.html?sid=6150041&q=world%20in%20conflict" title="Gamespot">World in Conflict Hands-On at Gamespot</a></p><p>Also: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63ZZ6hzqSGA&search=world%20in%20conflict" title="Trailer">WiC Trailer</a>, <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/706/706640p1.html" title="IGN">Preview at IGN</a></p><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><a href="http://www.tacticularcancer.com/gallery.php?dir=World%20In%20Conflict&file=Conflict02.jpg" title="WiC"><img src="http://www.tacticularcancer.com/screenshots/World%20In%20Conflict/thumbs/Conflict02_thumb.jpg" alt=" " width="200" height="150" /></a> <a href="http://www.tacticularcancer.com/gallery.php?dir=World%20In%20Conflict&file=Conflict07.jpg" title="WiC"><img src="http://www.tacticularcancer.com/screenshots/World%20In%20Conflict/thumbs/Conflict07_thumb.jpg" alt=" " width="200" height="150" /></a></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote></blockquote><p> </p>

Me neither, I just made it up. Could be interpreted as "the height of excellence," I suppose.

Hm, turns out that a brill is a fish of some sort. How Pynchonesque.

I first thought this was just another generic RTS, but that nuke looks better than in Supreme Commander. WMD's have been my weak spot since the Death Hand.

Choices, choices... but I'd still go with SC.

Gamespy has their own E3 hands-on impressions:

Our map was the small middle-American town I had seen during my earlier look at the game. The first thing that happened when we started playing is that each team member had to choose a class. While any player can choose to deploy any available weapon, players get a discount for the preferred units in their class. I chose to go with armor; my teammates went for air support and infantry. As we advanced on the town, I coordinated strategy with my teammates. In our first game, we went straight for the heart of the town trying to capture the strategic positions spanning the single bridge that crossed the river. Every strategic point we captured netted us an increase in the command points we could use to call in reinforcements and we progressed quite well for a while. Then the IGN guys called in a nuclear strike at the heart of the town.
