<strong>[ Preview ]</strong>

<p>Several sites are getting out their <a href="http://www.markofchaos.com/" target="_blank" title="MoC">Warhammer: Mark of Chaos</a> previews now that the game is only a month away. Here's what <a href="http://play.tm/story/8458" target="_blank" title="Play Preview">Play.tm</a> had to say:</p><blockquote><p>Most battle events will require you to drive off enemy units from your camp and then defend it when they return with higher numbers and reinforcements. You will have to keep an eye out on your flank though, as the enemy can easily surround you if you are paying too much attention to enemy units in front of you. As said, the beginning levels are easy but it is not a simple case of pointing and clicking to defeat the enemy. You will have to arrange your units wisely, paying attention to their stats and then, in battle, manoeuvre them effectively in order to succeed. </p></blockquote><p>There's also <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/warhammer/news.html?page=1&sid=6160655&part=rss&tag=gs_pc&subj=6160655" target="_blank" title="Gamespot Preview">Gamespot</a>, <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=148220" target="_blank" title="CVG">CVG</a>, and a new video at <a href="http://www.gamershell.com/download_16193.shtml" target="_blank" title="Video">Gamer's Hell</a>. I'd be a little more jazzed reading these previews if it wasn't for the fact that I haven't really heard anything positive from the folks who were invloved with the beta.</p><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><p><a href="http://www.tacticularcancer.com/gallery.php?dir=Mark%20of%20Chaos&file=MoC17.jpg"><img src="http://www.tacticularcancer.com/screenshots/Mark%20of%20Chaos/thumbs/MoC17_thumb.jpg" alt=" " width="200" height="160" /></a>

How does it compare to the original Dark Omen?

Are missions as tight and interesting?

Is troop development as interesting?

And does a shot of a cannon still send a few enemies fying through half a map? :)

OMG, just saw the game footage video. You are right, it looks precisely like a dumbed down version of Total War. Only slightly better than the abysmal Knights of Honor. Troops move totally unnaturally (not in the least according to which movements they make with their legs). They fight unnaturally (well, someone swings his sword and some 5 meters further someone dies and some 2 meters above a huge blood splatter appears).

I am amazed - what did they do all the time?!

Well, at least troops still fly a bit, when hit by a cannon. :)

What's so abysmal about that game? It's just 2D but it has a lot more atmosphere in it than yer average Total War game.

What is abysmal about KoH? Oh well, just that those critters err soldiers feel so like leaves in the wind. They scuttle here and they scuttle there, they somehow so lightly, that it barely seems to have any significance. I don't mind it being 2D, I just mind it being soo distant from everything.

The grand strategy overlay though I like a bit better then Total War, by the way. It's just that I despise the battles. It's the same as in Star Wars: Empire at War, where they gamesized everything so much, that a tie fighter is almost as big as a correllian corvette. Heck, even taking the very much same old angine as in Tie Fighter vs. X-Wing and just adding the strategic layer to it would have been much much better.

Or taking Mount&Blade and adding the strategic layer of Knights of Honour to it. Plus the graphics engine of Total War. Now here goes an idea... :)

Damn, Dark Omen was such a great game back in the day!

I still remember a piece of dialog from a mission:

"They're to the north"
"No, to the east"
"They're all around us!"

It was a tough as crap mission too, with enemies coming from 2 sides and not enough cannon to hold them both (if I remember correctly).

Is dark omen abandonware? Does it work in XP? Seeing that this new warhammer game is craptactular, I think the original dark omen is due for another replay.

Yeah, just recently replayed it. It was fun. :)

Again, I cursed this stupid dwarven tank just like back in those times. :)
