As long as we speak about stats... Here is one idea I got recently.
Virtues (aka values, aspirations, ambitions, dreams etc) as stats.
Good thing about this system: it is universal. If you have a character that can be in different roles: spy, ruler, warrior, pilot, businessman, etc, you don't need separate stat set for each situation. You can even use same set for equipment, societies and technology.
For example, let's take stat/virtue/value "survival". Someone with this stat high will value survival a lot and will have bonuses to "avoid being dead" in all situation. If he is a pilot, he will dodge enemy missiles better. If he fights hand to hand, he will take less damage from strikes. If he is spying in enemy city he will have less chance being caught. If he is a mayor of city, city will be harder to attack, and it will be more protected from disasters. If this person makes something (or city ruled by him makes something), it's more likely be an item with protective traits.
Not so good thing about this system: it's not easy to make a good universal set of virtues. Here is what I'm using now:
Control
Survival
Might
Wealth
Freedom
Temperance
Knowledge
"Control" is a tricky one. It means somthing like "soft power", "non-raw strength", "social knowledge" etc. In RPG it's usually represented by Charisma.
Temperance is mostly about conserving resources.
Rest is more or less evident.
Rough list of virtues combinations:
CF Journalist
CS Communist
CM Army
CW Corporation
CT Catholic
CK Technocrat
FS Hermit
FM Mercenary
FW Trader
FT Pilgrim
FK Tourist
SM Barbarian
SW Conquistador
ST Ascetic
SK Explorer
MW Fascist
MT Paladin
MK Evil Genius
WT Protestant
WK Edisson
TK Nerd
So, what do you thing about this? Can you suggest better set of virtues to use? I'm not very happy with this one, actually...
