Let me hijack this topic for a bit.
Anyone knows of a newer game that plays similar to Starfleet Command 3? By that I mean it is more focused on tactical battles and less on Pew Pew and you are not playing it from a cockpit.

Seems closest I found is Starpoint Gemini 2 but it is still not tactical enough.

Playing Star Fleet Battles or Federation Commander in person is pretty fun, bit more in depth than the pc games.

On the Arcadey side youve got Space Pirates and Zombies, and Dead Star.

Outside of that... Actual naval simulators are probably the way to go. Stuff like the old Silent Hunter series maybe.

Fucking Photon Torpedoes never landed.

Loved the Romulan plasmas. They and Klingons had some neat looking ships, wish they'd introduced them into canon.

How in the nine hells in Starpoint Gemini tactical? It's the most pew pew you can get.

Closest thing to tactical battles is probably Star Trek Online, but that got completely fucked over by the Chinese so now it's a typical MMO grindfest where you can't expect to do anything until you put in 5000 hours per toon.

It is tactical because you can manage energy output into different systems (shields, propulsion or weapons), limited boosters to systems, and you need to manage fire arcs.

What it is missing from SC3 is top down camera that allows you more tactical approach (Z axis in this case makes the game less tactical), an ability to damage specific system (like teleporters) and ability to strengthen specific shields. I probably missed some more things Sc3 has and SG2 does not.

Romulans were totally OP unless you played against an expert who could actually counter your cloak properly.
