Oblivion is unplayable without mods and whatever they do to it will no doubt be incompatible with existing mods, so that makes the whole idea counterproductive and stupid. Remakes and "remasters" are almost without exception a scourge upon the gaming industry.

However, Oblivion modding does suffer from faults of its engine, namely:
  • It's 32-bit, which can be a cause of crashes and instability due to getting bogged down from only using a small amount of memory.
  • It only utilises a single CPU core, due to even dual core support being new when Oblivion came out. If you add e.g more NPCs with AI packages, you can quickly overload the engine and slow the game down, which is most noticeable in loading and waiting times.
  • The way its distant LOD system works quickly leads to any mods increasing the number of distant objects (this includes mods editing areas of the game or adding new locations) raping even modern systems' graphics cards due to insane amounts of draw calls—one or more for every object—making good FPS potentially difficult or impossible to achieve even on modern computers, due to both GPU and CPU (see above) being stretched to their limits.
It would be excellent if these could be improved upon on the condition of maintaining mod compatibility as much as is possible, that's all that would be needed for anyone actually interested in the game. But I doubt any of this would even be on the radar of anyone doing a "remake", at best they might make it 64-bit without prioritising mod compatibility at all or fixing the second and third issues that are equally or more important.

Not a chance anyone doing a remake improves gameplay significantly. Remember, they would be remaking it to serve modern Bethesda, not the Bethesda of >20 years ago. If they did attempt anything like that, they would still do an inferior job to modders like Oscuro, who got hired at Obsidian for his work back in the day, and more likely than not you'd be stuck with inferior gameplay since a remake would undoubtedly break compatibility with mods, almost none of which would be updated at this point.

Wonder if they could make the difficulty slider work dynamically It would probably fix the game for most players without needing to revamp the leveling or the level scaling

The problem is that doing it also reduces the damage taken. In order to Oblivion be playable at high levels, you must multiply by a lot the damage inflicted and taken.

Make it look more like Cyrodiil is meant to look, revamp a couple of the quests to have more options, make the combat less shit, totally rework (or just remove) the level scaling, and Oblivion could be basically fine.

An unexpected leak from a verified and reliable source suggests Virtuos Games is reviving Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for modern consoles.​


While The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the best-selling game in the franchise (and one of the best-selling single-player titles of all time), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion holds a special place in the hearts of long-time fans. Unfortunately, it hasn't aged too well. Unless heavily modified, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion doesn't hold up compared to Skyrim.

Thankfully, Virtuos Games is working on a way to fix this.

According to a since-deleted post by a since-deleted user, Virtuos Games is working on five different projects, arguably the biggest of which is project "Altar", which they're describing as a "remaster/remake of Oblivion." According to the source, it's still unclear if it's going to be a full remake but the development team uses a pairing system "using both an Unreal Engine 5 project, and the old Oblivion one." The user, who claims to work for Virtuos Games Paris, says that the European studio is in charge of the project but Black Shamrock is helping the studio "for the art."

The user believes that the remaster/remake will be out before next year ends or by early 2025, "depending mostly on if it's a remake or remaster."

Interestingly, fans are working on a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in Skyrim's in-game engine, which is scheduled to come out in 2025 after spending more than a decade in development.

While we'd recommend that you take most leaks with a grain of salt, a mod for the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit verified the information of the source, proving that he's a former employee of Virtuos Games.

Remakes aren't Bethesda Softworks or Bethesda Game Studios' usual MO. In fact, outside of the multiple re-releases and ports of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda hasn't done a remake of an older title since, well, forever. Then again, it still isn't technically working on one - the development has been outsourced to Virtuos Games.

It's unclear if this project started development before or after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media since Bethesda would still have to green-light the project since it owns the IP.

It says it's a remaster, not a remake. Given Bethesda's trademark laziness, I wouldn't be surprised if they only tweaked the graphics and switched to a more modern lighting system.

Which means this iconic moment will likely be gone.

I hate both this remaster and skyblivion. I know several people who are holding off on playing oblivion at all waiting for this crap that will likely never come out anyway.

I'm fine with this. Morrowind is a beloved classic, if they fuck up an Oblivion remaster there won't be many tears shed. I like Oblivion for what it is. The setting might be generic fantasy but it's still unique in that there isn't much else out there that delivers that setting in the type of sandbox that Bethesda provides (Kingdom Come Deliverance came close).

The next Elder Scrolls won't be until 2028 at the earliest so they need to bridge the gap with something - Todd knows they can't rerelease Skyrim for the nth time.

i believe that you cant fix oblivion without redesigning the entire game. mods are not enough to fix it.
the game sucks for five major reasons:
1. questlines and questing suck because they require the player to traverse entire cyrodiil (and are bad and unfun in general, but thats not the point here)
3. level scaling is necessary, because of the above
2. leveling sucks, because of the above (and it was designed by a retard)
4. combat sucks, because of #2 and #3
5. no real sense of progression because all of the above. no sense of progression = no enjoyment from mastering the game
i dont even think fast travel is that bad compared to these. to fix oblivion you need to start with questing. fix it... redesign them, and then you can drop level scaling. then creating weak-ass builds will not matter that much and combat will suck less. some characters will need to grind a bit more to access some areas, but thats normal in an open world game. sliders or dynamic sliders are stupid, you dont need such solutions if your game is properly designed. fixing all of these, you will now have a game with a sense of progression.
but no, obviously remaster/remake will not sufficiently tackle any of these.
