If the studio system is so awful, why do people not just form their own game development coops and produce quality content that they share all the profits of?

Probably because the average game developer has the talent of a wet fart and wouldn't be able to produce anything of quality if their life depended on it.

The big misconception is that "Corporate suits are coming in and stopping developers from making GOOD GAMES!!!" but generally designers get what they want. Every game now being filled with boring and extraneous crafting systems, empty open worlds, and lackluster mechanics is not because of some corporate mandate. The designer genuinely thinks it's a good design.

Not a misconception, but a lot of both.

You have to sell your game. Marketing is hard and people who have thought the same learn the hard way.

Biggest industry news story of the day, undoubtedly

Xbox President Sarah Bond posted this yesterday. It has since been deleted.

Didn't Hi-fi Rush greatly perform above expectations? So why dispose of them as well? Did they just not make enough money?

Because just like all CEOs, Aaron Greenberg is a professional liar.

This is fucking retarded. Redfall's steam depots have been updated nearly every day since the last update in November. At least let them release what they've been working on? It wasn't a great game but it was one major update away from being playable at least.

Sony needs to buy FromSoftware before M$ gets their filthy hands on them. Say what you want about Songay but atleast they don't ruthlessly kill off their first party studios.

Phil, "who loves gaming and all gamers around the world", doesn't give an actual shit.

Obsidian sweating bullets right now.
No, first Avowed will come out, no one will care about it, and THEN they will kill Obsidian.
It will be fun to see what desperate measures Obsidian will resort to if they think it will stop Microsoft from shutting them down. I wanna say they'd add bear-sex to their game, but Avowed will probably be so dumbed down that it won't have shapeshifting, so what will they do?

Sony already owns part of FS (Tencent too). They are not independent anyway since Kadokawa owns roughly 70% of shares and they have zero incentive or interest to sell.
