Question about Gothic 2

I disagree that it doesn't require a S/L fest. While NOTR is an excellent expansion once you get a couple of levels, the beginning is a mistake. You start out getting raped by pretty much everything that moves. Out of luck with that wolf? Well, it scores a critical hit and you're dead.

It lead me to the point when I got to Khorinis and had the feeling that I can't complete any quests. Find the bandits? They'll kill me. Gather herbs? The wildlife will devour me.

I didn't have any experience with G2 or with the Gothic combat system before playing. It took me a couple of hours to find avenues which allow you to gain some painless experience and start to be self-sufficient.

A tip for those who start with the Gothic series with G2+NOTR:

1. Enter the 'gothic.ini' file and change your 'mouserotationscale' variable from 2 to 4. That'll make the character more responsive in control. If you're worried that it's cheating, it isn't. You won't gain an edge in combat or something.

Also, there's a place where you can enable quicksave/quickload in the .ini. Don't remember the exact name of the variable, but it was pretty much self-explanatory. Enable it, just be careful not to press F5 during a dialogue, bad things happen.

2. Help Greg.

3. Abuse the fact that Lares can escort you to a couple of places. You get experience from his kills. To get Lares away from the harbor, you need to get his water circle ring and talk to Baltram.

4. Learn smithing by becoming Harad's apprentice. It's the most profitable way. He'll want you to get him an orcish weapon. Tough? Not so. There's a small cave along the left side of the way to the Dead Harpy tavern, real close to Khorinis. Inside there's a single orcish warrior and a wolf. Lure them to the city guards, get the orc's weapon, profit. Try to deal the killing blow yourself since the orc's worth 300 XP.

5. Learn to parry. If you time it right, you can win most of the 1-1 fights by landing a single blow and immediately parrying the enemy. Practice on Moe or Alrik.

6. You can get 500 xp if you get into Khorinis without alarming the guards. You can do this by swimming into the city. If you plan to try this, prepare for a crazy Save/Load parade while you navigate your way through hostile beasts to get to the water; I had one, but it was real fun. There are probably other ways to get inside without passing through the gates, but I haven't found them. Talk to Lares if you succeed.

Once you're level 4-5, the game starts to be reasonably difficult instead of hellishly difficult.

I didn't have any experience playing any Gothic when I first played through NotR (almost). I became a Paladin, and so the biggest endgame quest was to visit shrines, no necessary combat involved. I hadn't played Gothic, and I didn't read advice about NotR either. I didn't have to fight wolves. I avoided them, mostly. I also avoided lurkers when in the Valley for the first time. Hell, I missed the short-cut cave, climbed over the mountains, missed the guy telling me where the castle was and how to get in, was completely lost partly due to the low draw distance I used, etc etc, never had as much PURE FUN in a game. You're just a retarded commie who can't function without Big Brother doing everything for him. Fuck off from this thread, idiot.

P.S. I used the default controls (which the developers recommend to be used even though they may seem more difficult to morons than the alternative).

The easiest way to get the 500 XP for getting into the city unseen is to walk up the chains of the drawbridge at the gate. Somewhat of a exploit though, as it makes little sense.

You sound like you're trying to argue with me. To be precise, you're arguing with a point I haven't made at all.
G2+NOTR lacks a way for a player new to the series to painleslly get a feel of the game. That's a fact. I didn't say that it's wrong that the player isn't handheld.
I know you probably finished the game while holding a fist up your arse and playing violin at the same time. I mean, I know that you claim to do so. It's a wonder that a prodigy such as you fails at life enough not to use your 'superior' talents for any measurable achievement.

Stop trying to cure your inferiority complex by bragging about your superiority on a message board. It won't help you, it just makes you look pitiful.

P.S. I used the default controls (which the developers recommend to be used even though they may seem more difficult to morons than the alternative)

Congratulations. Too bad that that's not much of an achievement. The only difference between the controls is that the old scheme takes longer to adjust to, while the new one is more intuitive.

LOL at idiot. I'm win at life while spending most of my time in these forums. I'm eating my escapist cake and eating my life cake too. That's double win and proves I'm an incurable genius. No real-world challenge can take up enough of my time for me not to spend most of it here, I've noticed. Now stop speculating retardedly about things you haven't got the slightest idea about, loser.

And the reason I'm mocking your commie instincts to hold everyone's hands and get held is that it's spoiling the gaming experience for everyone who comes to NotR thru your vapid collection of spoilers.

Can you guess, now, why I mentioned what controls I used? Try it in your privacy, and see what happens.

The only thing everything related to you proves is that you're an incurable moron.

There is also an abandoned orc-axe in another cave near the south gate... Just saying ...

Not a bad list of beginner tips - but one thing - point 5 seems kind of weird as a "tip", but I agree in its importance. You can't possibly play the game if you don't learn to block/parry attacks - you'll get slaughtered by Orcs or stronger NPCs way too easily. I guess it just seemed to me that parrying is an integral part of the combat system and not really up for debate.

basic strategy against damn near any beast (and even orcs for that matter) is to wait till they attack and jump back (just tap back in combat mode) and then swing in a few hits, then quick jump back again and repeat. You can kill something like a Dragon Snapper the first time you get to the Valley of Mines entrance near Bengar's farm if you have the stamina to do this like 100 times (its armor is probably too fucking high for you when you get there).

I found that the combat did warrant a bit of save/reloading but that the challenge overall kept combat from turning into a "haha I win" at level 20. Taking hits became a real issue, especially with orcs or lizardmen (or stronger NPCs) - and that I think is not at all a bad thing.

There are two realtively easy ways to get inside Khorinis without alarming the guards.
1. run towards the guards and as you approach them strafe and continue moving. If ypou do this correctly you'll be inside the city by the time they talk to you.
2. from the stairs down from the farm outside of the Korinis gates go straight ahead through the woods , avoid any monsters there and climb on the rocky wall ahead. On the other side you'll see the far end of the harbor. Continue moving on the top of the wall until you find a safe place to jump and not die. (on top of one of the huts probably)

Also the easiest way to go through battles is to use two handed weapons. Go to the mercenary camp, defeat Rod and pick up his weapon. Pump up your strength enough so you can use it and then improve your 2-handed skill until you are able to do a 3-combo hit. At this time you'll be able to win most 1-1 fights and many of the tougher monsters will be killable. The range of 2-handed swords will give you a huge advantage in combat.

I used to agree on the two handed combat thing but found the quicker hits from medium skill on a one hander to be very useful whenever you got caught off guard by a strong but not so fast opponent.

That and the lower STR requirements meant easier to find strong one handers. (pumping up STR costs a lot of LP!)

Anyone know what the correct CD crack to use for the Aspyr G2 Gold version is? I don't want to fuck around tinkering with it, I actually do have the disk (for once I didn't lose it in the 4 years or so it takes me to want to replay something I've bought) but I hate leaving it in the drive. Also were there any good official or unofficial patches for it?
