January 7, 2005 - In a letter to his fan community, popular sci-fi author Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game, the Homecoming series) revealed that he will help develop a new MMO title based on his Tales of Alvin Maker novels.
Card has entered an agreement with eGenesis, creators of the Biblically-inspired MMO title A Tale in the Desert, to develop the new title. Desert lead designer Andy Tepper will head the new project.
"I will be involved in game development," Card writes, "but I know enough about game design that I intend to let a very good design and programming team do their work without interference from me."
The new game will allow players to create a "non-combat-centered" online community set in the Alvin Maker universe -- an alternate version of America. Players can follow four magical systems, as well as a technology path, and the game will include appearances by characters such as Calvin, Arthur Stuart, Peggy Larner, and Alvin Maker himself.
Despite integration with the Alvin Maker storyline, Card hopes for universal appeal. "For me, the highest priority is making it a great game, whether a player has read the books or not," he writes.
