Thoughts on Emperor of the Fading Suns? It looks interesting, but even the reviews from it's time state that it has very poor AI.

Did the reviews mention that the best strategy by far is to build nothing but first level artillery? I really liked the setting and immersion but even Hyperion and nova mods did not fix the micromanagement.

EotFS is a great game.

When you forget about how broken and unfinished it is. And I as a "gameplay over bugs" dude do mean that.

But it's absolutely worth giving a try. It's a wargame-styled 4X where Dune meets Warhammer 40K. And also has awesome setting for gameplay - there is a galaxy map with dozens of planets and you can land on each planet and explore its surface incl. fighting for it.

Planets are not randomly generated though and use pre-made maps, but galaxy is.

Gathered resources are also not some abstract numbers, you actually have them present on your planets in a form of units - meaning they can be captured and transported off planet.

There's also church present which will determine if you develop heretic techs and then will try to raid your labs, burning them (hello wh40k). Obviously which techs are "heretic" is determined by a pope in power and to a degree a leash he is tied with. And yes you can raid and burn the church planet yourself.

Then there's a trader guild which will sell lots of shit to you and the opposition. And the more you buy from it the more money you give to it... Which in the end leads to a very naughty thing happening.
Of course you can burn their planet to the ground as well.

All this happens while the massive chaos-like race invasion should be happening (while there's a space marine chapter guarding the galaxy against them is present - and you can become a leader of it - and use it to do your dirty deeds). Should be because it's one of the major things that is broken and thus the invasion never ever happens. At least you can use spehs marenz to invade bros that want the throne.

There's a lot more depth to this game... But it's like a beta version dropped halfway from being finished.
