Creative isn't even that good, production is king, if you are talking about MoO2 power gaming.
It depends on how your enemies are willing to trade. In SP they are not very willing so it matters. Also having to decide between missile base and auto-factory does make the game more fun.

There are many alternative ways of getting tech: trade, espionage, conquest, ship capture. There is only one alternative to producing things and its buying things - not really viable is it?

Except auto factories do in fact produce things. I have rarely seen espionage and conquest work. Ship capture is combat strategy specific. The computer always trades down and on impossible I found it hard to trade for good tech.

telepathic is very powerful because of mind control - the entire colony, no matter the size, can be taken over in 1 turn; no waiting for enemy population to convert or threat of rebellion, in a small map you could even rush a cruiser and take over an enemy empire blitzcrieg. because of the way the game scores you, it is also the easiest way to get a high score.
