As any shareware game. You download it, play the "free area", pay if you like what you see, and unlock the rest.

This means that there'll be keygenerators out there within months.

Why not try this: Make it so that the game must be activated through the internet. After you receive the money, the user has to establish a connection to a computer of yours and only you can unlock the game from there.

If someone doesn't want to pay, there is very little you can do about it. Your suggestion will not force people who don't feel like paying to pay, but make it more complicated for "paying customers".

How about, at the start of the game, a nice white "Thank you for p(l)aying!"? That will stir the pirates' consciousness (conscience? You know. Gewissen.)

Also, some of us, for 8 months out of the year, live in a college dorm with no internet access and have to use the computer labs for internet access.

How about a demo and people who pay get a link and password to download the game?

Then someone who paid for the game would have to release it into the wild first for it to be pirated.

Also, you could send people who don't have internet access and don't want to pay for the premium edition just a CD with the game.

Online activation doesn't seem like a huge added problem on the customer side (based on my experience with Mount and Blade, at least).
Though it won't make people unwilling to pay any more willing to buy it, most likely.

Because he has to maintain the hype through exclusivity deals.

Oooh, missed me! Just kidding, VD.

There's only so much you can reveal through gameplay videos, especially in a game that depends more on storyline/atmosphere/dialogue than on impressive graphics. I hope we'll see more before the end, maybe the average town on display, and a bit of dialogue played out.
