Are there any decent games in this genre? I'm interested in realism and substance but hell hit me with anything.

Not what you're looking for but the only game I played with Roman gladiators is "Rome AD 92"... an early 90's Adventure game.

Battles of Norghan ~sorta you recruit and train a team, fantasy world.

Gladiators of Rome -Activision Value/Cat Daddy Games -reviews make it look mediocre but should be cheap if you can find it.

Actually Activision Value/Cat Daddy Games seems to be the PC equivalent of direct to video B movies.

Titans of Steel -way out in left field time. Mecha game. Recruit and train your pilots and design your own mechs. You win prize money for each battle to, you guessed it, hire more pilots and build bigger toys. I like the concept but hate the execution, combat got annoying for me fast. Specifically having to repeatedly hit the "wait for next action" over and over and over... It'd be a good game if it would leave you alone when you can't move or fire. Interrupting your wait when you can't do anything is just god damn annoying.

If you're interested ignore the "buy it" link on Underdogs. The game was originally freeware and later signed up with Matrix to do Warring Suns. Websearch for Titans of Steel 1.4 to find the last freeware version.

Gladiator V14 -Please note 99% of this website is devoted to Oblivion.

Gladiator 1.01 No clue.

In the Mech genre, didn't "One Must Fall: 2097 AD" have a management feature?

I used to own this one, so here's the lowdown:

It's completely linear, a series of increasingly difficult battles - I think about 20 or 30 in total, and that's being generous. You could complete the game in one sitting, probably about 3 hours.

That said, the battles themselves aren't too bad. You essentially get full control of where your gladiator(s) go, and who they attack. There are quite a few 'special' attacks too, depending on which weapons you choose (e.g poison daggar, 'knockdown' with hammer, etc). You gain cash for winning - and extra bonus cash for taunting your opponents during the fight, which of course also leaves you vulnerable - and this can be spent on training, weapon and equipment upgrades.

It's entertaining enough while it lasts, but don't expect it to keep you busy for more than an afternoon or so. The gladiator management, upgrades & battle system are decent enough (a long way from stunning, mind you) but the game is let down by being incredibly linear and very short.

Worth a shout if you can get it for a couple quid.

Gladius was great.

it had a stupid crazy amount of battles. I think if you played the game twice (you could start has two different characters, who started in two different lands, had different endings and story, and therefore had a nearly completely differnet party, but otherwise same battles) it topped 120 hours.

Gladius (at least the Gamecube version), had the worst level scaling of any game ever. The point of a game was to build a troop of gladiators and drag them around the empire, picking 1-4 of them to engage in any particular fight. However, your oponents would scale to the strength of your entire troop, rather than what you threw in the ring.

So if you had 4 lvl 5 guys and sent them all into the ring, you may face 4 lvl 5 guys. But if you had 20 lvl 5 guys and sent 4 into the ring you might face 4 lvl 8 guys, and get your ass seriously handed to you. There were a lot of different gladiator types that behaved quite differently, so the game was tearing itself in half.

To be honest, I didnt notice any scaling at all, though I did play the Xbox version. Maybe after you went to the city, it established your difficulty in battle, because Id get my ass kicked, go elsewhere, level up, and usually be able to defeat the first city.

I remember some classes just being friggen annoying, like the woods witch and satyrs.

I wanted a minotaur real bad, but there was some cattywhompus way aobut getting them, so mostly I used dervishes, archers, yeti, and the shield throwy guys.

Thanks.

Hav'nt tried Coliseum yet but it looks alright. Battles of Norghan plays pretty good and looks to be a long ass game but i've spent too much recently to make a purchase. Titans of steel is probably the worst interfaced game i've played which still proved to be fun.
Gladiator 1.01 is a quick laugh but there is no slow build up.
