Do any of the giga chad turbo nerds here remember and old possibly pixel art space strategy game where you could "ascend" after "winning" leaving behind a gap which the remaining empires would fight over and you could play as one of those empires instead of starting a new game?

Much more exploring and diplomacy and less micro management and extermination stuff in the endgame?

Nothing like that in ascendancy. it's star control 2 , Towards the end of the game, the player can make a decision that affects the fate of the galaxy, and depending on the choice made, the player can continue playing as a different faction in a post-game sandbox mode.

This is not at all the Star Control 2 I remember, which had a fairly linear plot and only one playable faction/character.
