Don't ease him into this, smash his face in with the RPG brick. Dark Sun is king. Gold Box or Ultima (4/5) are also solid suggestions. Wizardry 7, maybe?
If you want to introduce someone to RPGs then introducing them to RPG combat is utmost priority, Fallout is terrible for this and Torment barely has combat at all. Your friend can try the casual shit in his own time, but don't start with anything later than '94.

As said, he loves "The Road", I guess the rather mean setting of FO1 will turn him off.

i have done this many times.

you have to relize that he just may not be into it and that you may not suceed.

but after you are ready to try, here is how to set it up.

be aloane with him late at night. at least midnite but best after the pubs and bars are closed.

Fallout 2 then Fallout 1 are a good start. However have him play mostly Black Isle-Troika era rpgs until you think hes ready for more older ones.
