The gameplay is divided between a Japanese-style social sim where you start out as a fat, socially inept geek who majors in communication at university, and an arcade portion for the debate "battles". The latter is a combination of Rampart and tower defence - first you choose an Agenda (determining what buildings and abilities you can use and what you gain or lose after the debate), place Arguments (the backbone of your base, like wall systems and automated production complexes) and Tactics (towers and on-demand unit production) and fight on a tactical map (two large squares connected by bridges, one is yours, one is your opponents'). The way to victory depends on your build and playstyle: a cheap smartass would bombard and disable an enemy with towers, a logical debater would stay holed up in his base and convert enemy creeps and buildings when he sees an opening, an internet troll would launch a berserk rush that becomes much stronger if counter-attacked, a passionate demagogue would just make hordes of creeps that are hard to kill as long as they don't slow down.
Post-debate you get upgrades based on your performance and your alignment may change, restricting access to some styles and improving others. Knowledge and skills can also be gained at classes, from analyzing famous speeches, etc. You may become a ladies' man, an internet celebrity, make a brilliant scientific career without actually doing science or start a cult and take over the country.
